I recently acquired the rest of the HTE Parts for my Axial CJ7 and Redcat Ascent. Among the upgrades I obtained were a new rear mount for the bumper, a different kind of rear bumper that came with a blue body, and a rear link riser. Let’s take a closer look at these upgrades.
New Rear Bumper
One of the first upgrades I installed was the new rear bumper. It was quite different from the previous one I had, and it came in a stylish blue color. The installation was straightforward, and I was eager to see how it would perform on the trails.

However, for future projects, I am considering using a white primer instead of the light grape primer I used. I think a white primer would give a brighter background and make the blue color pop a little more. The Roll Cage
I’m also thinking about painting the roll cage of the vehicles. However, since I plan on using them extensively and expect them to experience a lot of wear and tear, the paint will likely wear off quite quickly. This could add to the character of the vehicles, but I’m still undecided. In the right light, the painted roll cage looks okay, but it does appear darker than the body.

The LED Lights

These lights were conveniently available in a four-pack, which included two LEDs specifically designed for the back of the vehicle. Initially, I considered placing these lights on the front pillar, but upon further consideration, I realized that they would obstruct the driver’s view. Consequently, I opted for single, narrower LED lights on the front pillars. Their compact size allows for better visibility and avoids any potential hindrance during off-road adventures.

I purchased it online from Amazon after carefully measuring its width to ensure it would fit perfectly on the mount attached to the roll cage. Surprisingly, I found out later that there are pillar mounts available as well, which I had missed during the video that showcased the vehicle. Unfortunately, those mounts were wider and would have obstructed the driver’s view, defeating the purpose of installing LED lights in the first place.

I also decided to put the old pillar mounts back on and attach some LEDs to them. To make it look clean and tidy, I added a wire covering. This covers the wires and ensures that they are not visible. The wire covering runs all the way down and helps to hide the wires effectively.
I took extra care to focus the camera on the wire hovering, ensuring that everything looks neat and well-organized. The LED light bar is also tucked away nicely, with zip ties and wire covering helping to conceal it. I even added a few additional pieces of wire covering to hide the red wires, making it look even neater.
Redcat Ascent Upgrades
The Redcat Ascent is another impressive RC car, but there are some upgrades that can take it to the next level. One upgrade I highly recommend is the fine laser design body mount. It is a significant improvement over the stock body clips, which can be a hassle to use. The body clips often give me a hard time when I try to remove or attach the body to the car. The fine laser design body mount simplifies the process and saves a lot of frustration.
However, there is one drawback when it comes to upgrading the Redcat Ascent. The car does not accept a normal SCX103 bumper. This means that if you have aftermarket bumpers for other vehicles, they won’t fit on the Redcat Ascent. The mounting system for this car is completely different, so you’ll need to look for a specific bumper that is compatible with the Redcat Ascent.
Overall, both the Axial CJ7 and Redcat Ascent can benefit from these upgrades. The new light bar and wire covering on the Axial CJ7 provide better lighting and a cleaner appearance. The fine laser design body mount on the Redcat Ascent makes attaching and detaching the body much easier. However, it’s worth noting that finding a bumper for the Redcat Ascent can be a challenge, as it requires a specific mounting system. Despite this, these upgrades are definitely worth considering and will enhance your RC car experience.
Upgrades for the Axial CJ7 & Redcat Ascent: A Comprehensive Review
Bumper Compatibility
One of the first things to note about the Axial CJ7 and Redcat Ascent is that not all bumpers are compatible with these models. Unfortunately, the bumpers I had did not fit on the Redcat Ascent. Additionally, the Pine laser design clip is an essential component, as losing it can render certain upgrades useless.
Exterior Upgrades
In terms of exterior upgrades, I have invested in SSD Tiff covers and brass additions for both the front and rear parts of the vehicle. Moreover, I have added a racing skid plate for enhanced off-road performance. As for the wheels and tires, I have replaced the stock ones with upgraded options. These mods have significantly improved the overall appearance and functionality of the Axial CJ7 and Redcat Ascent.
Motor and ESC Performance
However, I must admit that I am not entirely satisfied with the motor and ESC performance of these vehicles. While the ESC has decent throttle control, it still feels lacking in power compared to other models. This becomes apparent when tackling steep inclines or requiring sudden bursts of acceleration. In an attempt to address this issue, I plan to install a Hobbywing Fusion Pro motor. However, the downside is that changing the ESC on the Redcat Ascent requires replacing the entire electronic system, which incurs added costs.
Hero Performance
Finally, I have found the hero performance of the Axial CJ7 and Redcat Ascent to be subpar. It simply does not meet my expectations in terms of responsiveness and reliability. To enhance the hero functionality, further upgrades or replacements may be necessary.

Fusion Pro Performance Upgrade
The Axial CJ7 and Redcat Ascent are decent RC vehicles, but let’s face it, they’re not that great straight out of the box. That’s why I decided to go with a Fusion Pro upgrade to enhance their power and performance. I’ve used the Fusion Pros before in two other RC vehicles, and they have always turned out really well. The smooth running and improved capabilities make them a great choice for these models as well. Personally, I’ve installed one in my Ecto and it has become the smoothest running truck I own. So naturally, I’m excited to see how it will transform the Axial CJ7 and Redcat Ascent.
Undecided Modifications
While I’m pretty set on using the Fusion Pro upgrade, I’m still contemplating whether to try other modifications as well. One YouTuber I follow, Wintertime RC, has the red version of these RC vehicles and has made some impressive modifications. He added hinges to the hood and even cut and latched it in a way that gives a more realistic appearance. If you’re interested in seeing how it’s done, I highly recommend checking out his excellent video on the subject. Personally, I prefer the blue version of these vehicles, but I’m still intrigued by the modifications Wintertime RC made, so I’m on the fence about whether or not to give them a try.
Matching Sticker Trim
To make the modifications more seamless, I plan on cutting and trimming a couple of hinges similar to the ones Wintertime RC used. This way, I can match the design of my stickers and achieve a cohesive look. It’s these little details that can really elevate the overall appearance and performance of the RC vehicles.
