A Second Chance
Yes, I have added another Traxxas Raptor to my collection. I simply couldn’t resist the allure of the awesome Fox body. I still regret not purchasing a similar fox body RC car in the past, which was a two-wheel drive model. Its beauty was undeniable, but I made the grave mistake of flipping it upside down during a drive, causing it to skid and suffer damage to its lid. What a heart-wrenching experience it was.
The Irresistible Body
Now, just take a look at how pristine this body is. The clean lines, the bold orangish-red color in the front, it’s absolutely mesmerizing. I can’t help but admire it. But let me tell you, I won’t make the same mistake again. This Traxxas Raptor 4×4 Slash, with its extended chassis, is here to stay. I refuse to let it suffer the same fate as its unfortunate predecessor.
The Pro Scale Experience
The Pro Scale concept is where this RC car truly shines. By extending the chassis, Traxxas has managed to create a more realistic and scale appearance. It’s as if the Traxxas Raptor R has been plucked straight out of a car enthusiast’s dream. The attention to detail is superb, and I couldn’t be happier.

With a wrench in hand, I meticulously adjusted and fine-tuned the car to ensure it was race-ready. The anticipation was palpable as fellow racers observed my preparations, intrigued by the modifications made to my vehicle.
The Race Begins
Finally, the moment arrived. The race was about to commence, and my Traxxas Raptor R was itching for the challenge. With all the upgrades and adjustments in place, I took my position on the starting line, heart pounding with nervous excitement. As the race began, the roar of engines filled the air, and I eagerly controlled my car with precision.
A Beast On the Track
It didn’t take long for my Traxxas Raptor R to make its mark on the track. The combination of its upgraded tires and the meticulous adjustments I had made allowed it to handle the corners and straights with ease. The satisfaction that washed over me as I smoothly navigated the track was unparalleled.
Conclusion (optional)
As the races continued throughout the night, my Traxxas Raptor R proved its worth time and time again. The exhilaration of seeing it perform at its best fueled my passion for RC car racing. The journey of unleashing the full potential of a scale RC car on the track is an experience many enthusiasts crave, and with the Traxxas Raptor R, that dream becomes a reality.
Picking Up Upgrades for Better Performance
In our second home with the new Traxxas Raptor R, I decided it was time to pick up some upgrades to improve its performance. One of the first things I wanted to address was the tires. While the stock tires may be sufficient, I wanted to be prepared for any changes in track conditions. That’s why I went for the S1 tires. They offer excellent traction, which is crucial for optimal performance on the track. The Kumo tire pattern stood out to me as the best choice, so I opted for part number 6874 R.
A Servo Upgrade for Smoother Steering
Driving experience is not just about speed; it’s also about control. That’s why I decided to upgrade the steering system with the Traxxas 400 Servo. This brushless Servo provides incredibly smooth steering, which is essential for precise maneuvering on the track. By adding this upgrade, I can fine-tune the steering to suit my driving style and make quick adjustments during races.
The Game-Changing Shock Upgrade
When it comes to improving performance, one of the most important aspects to consider is the suspension system. That’s why I chose to invest in the GTR shocks. These shocks feature a PTFE coating, ensuring smooth operation and reducing friction. By enhancing the performance of the suspension, I can tackle rough terrains and take corners with greater stability and control.
A Futaba Radio for Enhanced Control
To further enhance my control over the Traxxas Raptor R, I decided to replace the stock radio with a Futaba radio system. Binding it to the Futaba radio allows me to have greater control over steering and braking, making tuning adjustments a breeze. This increased level of connectedness to the vehicle brings the driving experience to a whole new level.
With these upgrades in place, I am now ready to push the limits of my Traxxas Raptor R on the track. The improved tires, servo, shocks, and radio system all work together to create a high-performance RC car that is a joy to drive. Whether it’s tackling different track conditions, maneuvering with precision, or fine-tuning the setup, these upgrades have made a noticeable difference in the overall performance and enjoyment of my RC car.
Advantage of the Phuta Radio
One of the biggest advantages of the Phuta radio is the ability to control the brakes. With the VXL systems, the responsiveness can sometimes feel like a light switch. However, with the Phuta radio, it promises to offer a more controlled and tamed experience. To achieve this, I decided to install a Futaba receiver in my RC car. But before that, I wanted to test out the car in its stock version to see how it performs.
Stock Version Performance
Driving the Traxxas Raptor R in its stock form was an exciting experience. The speed and power were impressive, but I couldn’t help but feel that there was room for improvement. The acceleration was quick, but the brakes lacked the finesse that I was hoping for. Overall, it was a good RC car, but I knew it could be even better with some upgrades.
Upgrades for Enhanced Performance
After driving the stock RC car, it was time to make some upgrades. I wanted to see if these modifications would enhance the performance or perhaps even make it worse. As an enthusiast, the prospect of improving my RC car always intrigued me.
Random Tech Tip: Binding Issues
One common issue that many Traxxas owners face when trying to bind their new radio with their old Traxxas cars is the problem of finding neutral or having a signal. In my case, whenever I tried to calibrate the remote and set the neutral position, a blinking light indicated that it couldn’t find neutral or detect a signal.
Analog vs Digital Signals
The reason behind this issue lies in the fact that these cars are built on analog signals, not digital ones. So, to resolve this problem, it is necessary to set the remote for an analog signal and switch it off of digital. In my case, I used a 10px radio, and I found the specific settings to make the necessary adjustments. However, for Spectrum remotes, the default setting is often for a 5, so it is essential to switch to analog signals to ensure proper calibration.
In conclusion, the Traxxas Raptor R is an impressive RC car, but with the addition of the Phuta radio and other upgrades, it has the potential to become even better. The prospect of enhancing its performance and control is exciting for any RC car enthusiast. With a better braking system and the ability to fine-tune the acceleration, this RC car has the potential to provide a more refined and exhilarating experience.
Calibrating the RC Car
When I first got my Traxxas Raptor R RC car, I couldn’t wait to take it out for a spin. However, before I could do that, I needed to make sure the car was properly calibrated. One important aspect of calibration is setting the response rate correctly. I found that a response rate of around 11.1 or 11.5 worked best for me.
To adjust the response rate, I accessed the user menu on my radio and navigated to the receiver settings. When binding the receiver, I made sure to select the option that said “response analog Servo.” This ensures that the ESC (Electronic Speed Control) of the car calibrates correctly. It’s essential to set the response to analog rather than digital for optimal performance.
Steering Adjustments
During my first outing with the Traxxas Raptor R, I noticed that the steering was quite sensitive. As soon as I attempted to turn, the car would rotate quickly, making it challenging to control. To address this issue, I adjusted my steering curve to make it less responsive.
I set the steering curve to around -20, which means that the initial steering input is slower. By doing this, the car becomes less twitchy and easier to handle. While the car didn’t jump exceptionally well, it did launch off jumps adequately. However, upon landing, it created a rather unique sound.
Unconventional Landing
The way the Traxxas Raptor R landed after jumping was quite extraordinary. It was often described as sounding like a refrigerator being thrown down. This unconventional landing added an unexpected element to the overall experience of using the RC car. While it may not have been what I anticipated, it definitely added a touch of excitement and unpredictability to each jump.
Fixing the Slamming Issue
The Traxxas Raptor R RC car had this issue where it would slam down pretty hard. It was definitely not a pleasant sight to see, but fortunately, there was a solution to fix this problem. The plan was to make adjustments to the shocks and hopefully, that would do the trick.
Skating Out of the Corners
Another issue with the car was its tendency to skate coming out of the corners. This was quite frustrating, especially when you’re starting to gain confidence in driving it. You want to power out of the corners with full force, but instead, the car would peel out and spin around or fish tail uncontrollably. It was time to find a solution for this problem as well.
The Solution: S1 Tires
While there was no TSM (Traxxas Stability Management) on this particular RC car due to the use of a Futaba radio, there was still hope for improvement. The solution to the skidding issue was to switch to S1 tires. It was believed that these tires would provide better traction and stability, ultimately fixing the problem.
Upgrades in Progress
With all the necessary upgrades identified, it was time to put them into action. The plan was to add 500 weight oil to the GTR shocks, which would help in reducing the slamming issue. Additionally, the S1 tires would be installed to address the skating problem. It was an exciting moment, as these upgrades promised to enhance the overall performance of the Traxxas Raptor R.
Intense Fun on the Track
With all the upgrades in place, it was time to hit the track and put the Traxxas Raptor R to the test. The car proved to be incredibly fun to drive. It allowed for a few laps of uninterrupted racing, without any major mistakes. Seeing this scaled truck zoom around the track was undeniably rewarding and added an extra layer of excitement to the experience.
Minor Adjustments for Optimization
While the race upgrades proved to be effective, there were still some minor adjustments that could have been made for optimal performance. Looking back, it would have been a good idea to get two sets of black extra long Springs and use them in the front. The current configuration with the spring retainer almost all the way down was done to achieve the desired spring rate, but having extra long Springs would have been more beneficial.
The Final Verdict
Despite the minor setbacks in terms of configuration, the Traxxas Raptor R RC car performed exceptionally well on the track. It showcased its potential to deliver a thrilling and satisfying racing experience. The upgrades, though not perfect, were sufficient to overcome the initial issues of slamming and skidding. Overall, it was an exciting journey to witness this RC car reach its full potential and provide endless hours of fun.
