Introduction
The FMS FJ40 is an amazing rig that is worth considering if you are a fan of scale realism and are looking for a budget-priced Hardbody truck. In this article, we will explore the features and performance of the FMS FJ40 and discuss some important factors to consider before hitting the trails.
Unboxing Experience
When you receive the FMS FJ40, the level of care put into its packaging is immediately apparent. The truck is securely held in place with tight anchoring, ensuring that it arrives in pristine condition. The reusable styrofoam case is a thoughtful addition, making it convenient for both storage and travel. Inside, you’ll find comprehensive manuals that will guide you through the installation of final accessories like side view mirrors and the front license plate.
Aesthetic Appeal
There’s no denying that this truck looks absolutely stunning. The attention to detail is evident both on the exterior and interior of the body. From the intricate exterior design to the soft, foldable rear seats, every aspect of this model exudes quality. The steering wheel is not just for show; it actually turns, thanks to a small servo. However, while the overall appearance is impressive, it’s worth noting that the stock tires may not meet everyone’s expectations.
Size Comparison
Though officially labeled as a 1/10 scale model, the dimensions of the FMS FJ40 are more in line with a 1/16 or 1/17 scale. But don’t let that discourage you. The wheel base and width of this truck are comparable to other popular crawler platforms on the market. This ensures that you’ll have no trouble tackling various terrains while maintaining a realistic scale appearance.
Ready to Run
One major perk of this model is that it comes fully ready to run. However, it’s important to note that you’ll need to provide your own batteries for both the truck and transmitter. Once you’ve powered up, you’ll be able to experience the thrill of driving this amazing rig. Whether you’re hitting the trails or engaging in some mild crawling, the FMS FJ40 is up for the challenge.
In conclusion, the FMS FJ40 truly is an amazing rig for any RC enthusiast. The level of detail and quality put into this model is breathtaking. From the meticulous packaging to the realistic interior features, every aspect of this truck is well thought out. While there may be some room for improvement in terms of the stock tires, this is a small issue that can easily be rectified. Overall, if you’re looking for a high-quality, visually stunning RC truck, the FMS FJ40 is definitely worth considering.
Body and Interior
The FMS FJ40 comes in a well-designed package, with all the parts neatly organized. Though this particular model may have been a little crooked out of the box, it was easily corrected. The doors open smoothly, and the door handles on the front doors are fully functional. There’s no need to worry about them popping open while driving down the trail. Even the window winders can be rotated, although they do not actually raise or lower the windows. Perhaps in the future, FMS will find a way to implement this feature. The headlights also deserve a special mention, as they have a nice soft warm glow, which gives the rig a touch of elegance. Unlike some other models, the body of the FMS FJ40 is beautifully painted, not just made of bare plastic. Although it would be possible to enhance the appearance with a new paint job or weathering, the stock truck right out of the box looks impressive.
Under the Hood
The electronic components can be found under the hood of this amazing rig. This is also where the battery will be placed, so it’s important to ensure that your battery either has an xt60 plug or a suitable adapter. Additionally, make sure that the ESC is properly set up to run the type of battery you’ll be using. It appears that a conventional hard pack LiPo battery might be a little too large for this model, but a helos shorty pack or similarly sized batteries fit perfectly. However, it should be noted that the battery mounting situation is not ideal and may require some modifications.
The Transmitter
The transmitter that comes with the FMS FJ40 is fairly basic but functional. It includes a channel 3 3-position switch and a Channel 4 button, allowing you to control various aspects of the rig. While it may not have all the bells and whistles of more advanced transmitters, it is still capable of providing a satisfactory driving experience.
Test Drive
Now comes the exciting part – the test drive! Once you have properly set up the electronics and attached the battery, it’s time to hit the trails with the FMS FJ40. Whether you’re a seasoned RC enthusiast or a beginner, this rig is sure to provide an enjoyable driving experience. Its sturdy build and impressive design make it suitable for off-road adventures. However, before you start exploring tough terrains, it’s advisable to familiarize yourself with the controls and get comfortable with the handling. This will ensure a smoother and safer driving experience.
In conclusion, the FMS FJ40 is an amazing rig that offers a lot of fun and excitement for RC enthusiasts. With its functional doors and impressive design, it is sure to turn heads on the trail. Just make sure to take note of the battery and transmitter considerations mentioned above before embarking on your off-road adventures. So, what are you waiting for? Unbox, test drive, and enjoy the thrill of the FMS FJ40!
Unused Channels and Expansion Possibilities
In its stock form, the FMS FJ40 doesn’t make use of the third or fourth channel. However, the third channel slot is utilized to power the front LEDs. This means that if you’re planning on installing additional accessories like a winch, you don’t need to switch out the transmitter and receiver. The chassis of the FMS FJ40 offers room for expansion, allowing enthusiasts to customize their rig to their liking.
A Familiar Chassis with Some Improvements
Underneath the FMS FJ40, you’ll find a chassis that is similar to the one used in the rock hobby Atlas and Mhigan models. It features metal frame rails, suspension links, and steering links. One notable improvement on this chassis is the inclusion of a front pan hard bar. This addition helps eliminate the presence of bump steer, addressing a common issue seen in the Mhigan model. This is a nice touch that enhances the overall performance and handling of the truck.
A Small Hitch with the Suspension Travel
While the inclusion of a front pan hard bar is commendable, it seems that the mounts for the optional leaf spring kit on the FMS FJ40 are coming into contact with the lower links. This unfortunate contact results in a slight loss of suspension travel in the front. If you don’t have plans to convert your truck to leaf springs, it would be wise to remove or grind down these parts to regain the lost suspension travel. It’s disappointing that these mounts aren’t separate pieces that can be easily unscrewed, but a bit of cutting or grinding should solve the issue.
In conclusion, the FMS FJ40 is an impressive rig that offers plenty of potential for customization and expansion. The unused channels provide an opportunity to add accessories without the need for additional equipment. The chassis, reminiscent of the Atlas and Mhigan models, showcases sturdy construction with the added bonus of a front pan hard bar. However, the interference between the optional leaf spring mounts and the lower links is a minor setback that can be addressed with some modifications. Overall, the FMS FJ40 is a promising choice for avid trail drivers looking for a reliable and customizable off-road experience.
Undampened Shocks and Bouncing Truck
When it comes to off-roading on the trails, some people may not mind the undampened shocks on their vehicles. In fact, they enjoy seeing their trucks bounce around as they navigate rough terrains. However, if you’re planning to modify your truck for better performance, upgrading the shocks should definitely be on your list of modifications.
Optional Leaf Springs by FMS
But that’s not the only option available to you. FMS also offers a set of optional leaf springs that can be installed separately between your truck and the bashan. These leaf springs can provide a different kind of suspension for your rig, giving you more versatility in your off-roading adventures.
Encountering Linkage Issues
While overall, the FMS FJ40 is a pretty solid platform, I have encountered a few issues with the string linkage. These issues can affect the truck’s performance and maneuverability, making it important to address them properly. But I’ll talk more about these issues in just a bit.
Suitable for General Trail Driving
Despite the occasional issues, the FMS FJ40 is well-suited for general trail driving. It handles the trails with ease and can tackle various terrains effortlessly. Whether you’re navigating through mud, rocks, or uneven surfaces, this truck will get you through. And if desired, it can also be upgraded to enhance its performance even further.
Comparison with Smaller Scale Platforms
Having reviewed FMS’ smaller scale platforms in the past, such as the FCX 24 and FCX 18, I can’t help but notice some similarities. The FJ40 shares some features with these smaller rigs, but there are also some notable differences. For example, the FJ40 lacks a two-speed transmission or portal axles, which are present in the smaller scale platforms. In my opinion, the electronics included in the smaller rigs are better suited for those vehicles than the ones chosen for the FJ40. However, it’s important to consider that including such features would increase the overall cost of the FJ40.
A Blast to Drive
Despite its size and weight, the FMS FJ40 is surprisingly enjoyable to drive. Its large and heavy build gives it a certain presence on the trails. However, due to its height and hard body, it’s crucial to exercise caution to avoid rolling it over during your off-roading adventures.
After filming the shots you see here, I decided to push the FJ40’s capabilities by taking it over slightly more challenging rocks and terrains. To my pleasant surprise, it managed to impress me with its performance on those obstacles. While it may not be a dedicated crawler, it certainly holds its own as a trail truck.
In conclusion, the FMS FJ40 is an amazing rig that offers a great off-roading experience. However, it’s important to address certain issues such as the string linkage and consider the vehicle’s suitability for your specific needs. Once you’ve got it in the right environment, this trail truck will undoubtedly provide you with a lot of fun and excitement on your off-road adventures.
Stock Electronics
I do think the experience is somewhat let down, though, by the stock Electronics. Just like the mashan, the drag breake is very harsh and I dont see any way to adjust it. The stock steering servo is also a bit underpowered for just about anything more serious than General Trail driving.
Modulation and Speed
Modulation at lower speeds is decent, but not as good as some of the other FMS models when you put them in low gear top speed on 2s is maybe slightly faster than a walking pace. This ESC will let you use up to a 3s lipo which will increase the top speed well beyond a comfortable walking pace, so a perfect truck for cruising down some Trails while on a hike, but that drag break sort of spoils the experience for me.
Convenience Features
Again, when I’m running one of the FCX series vehicles in high gear, I can quickly adjust the drag Brak setting or even turn it off entirely right from the transmitter. Such a feature on one of these larger models from FMS would be awesome, but good things come to those who wait.
Upgrades
Overall, a solid rig in stock form, but I think it could definitely benefit from some minor upgrades to really enhance the Driving Music Music Experience.
A Fun Ride but with a Minor Issue
All right, so I’m back from the trail, what a fun rig to cruise around with absolutely loving this thing already, however, it did leave me stranded. Well, okay, strand is a strong word, but let me show you what happened. If you look right here, as you can see, the fastener used to secure this arm to the servo fell out while driving. It held up great all day.
Unboxing and Preparing for the Test Drive
Right at the very end of the unboxing process, the truck fell out. This was quite a relief because the truck is heavy and carrying it around would have been quite a task. Fortunately, this is an easy fix. All I need is an M3 fastener, preferably an M3 by six Fastener. I will drive it right in there and use a little bit of Loctite to ensure it doesn’t fall out again.
Before we hit the trails, there are a few important things to remember. Whether it’s this vehicle or any other ready to run model, it is crucial to check all the fasteners before your first drive. While most manufacturers do a great job of assembling the trucks, it is always a good idea to go through it and ensure all the fasteners are tight. It’s tempting to dive right in and take it out for a drive when you get a brand new rig, but a little patience can go a long way.
Performing a Once-Over
Now that the truck is prepared, it’s time for a once-over. I will go through the entire vehicle and make sure everything is tight. This step is important because even the best-assembled trucks may have a few loose screws. By checking and tightening all the fasteners, I can significantly reduce the risk of any issues during the test drive.
Additionally, the diff covers seem to be a little loud, so I will take this opportunity to open them up and ensure there is enough grease inside. Adequate lubrication is important for smooth operation and longevity of the truck. By giving the diffs a quick check and adding grease if necessary, I can improve their performance and reduce the chances of any potential issues.
Upgrading the Steering Servo Arm
One other area I’d like to address before hitting the trails is the steering servo arm. The stock plastic arm from the rock hobby mhigan, a similar vehicle to this one, could use an upgrade. By replacing it with a stronger and more durable arm, the steering will become more precise and responsive. This upgrade will provide improved control while navigating challenging terrains, ensuring a better overall driving experience.
The Excitement of the Test Drive
With all the necessary preparations complete, it’s finally time to hit the trails! Now that everything is checked, tightened, and upgraded where needed, I am full of anticipation to see how this amazing rig performs. The FMS FJ40 has received rave reviews, and I’m excited to put it through its paces and experience its capabilities firsthand.
During the test drive, I’ll be paying close attention to the truck’s handling, suspension, and overall performance. Once I’ve put it through its paces, I’ll be able to offer an in-depth review of its strengths and any areas where improvements could be made. But for now, it’s time to buckle up and enjoy the thrill of off-roading with this incredible rig.
Remember, before you take your own ready to run vehicle out for its first spin, take the time to check all the fasteners, perform necessary upgrades, and ensure everything is in proper working order. This small investment of time and effort will go a long way in ensuring a successful and enjoyable off-roading experience.
Upgrading the Servo Arm and Servo
The hole got stripped out and the fastener fell out on the mhigan. To prevent this from happening again, I decided to upgrade both the servo arm and the servo on the FMS FJ40. I opted for a metal steering arm as a replacement to ensure durability. Not only does it offer better stability, but it is also an offset arm that sits lower in the vehicle, eliminating the need for the spacer that was previously used. If you’re planning to upgrade, make sure to choose a 25-tooth servo, as it is a very common option.
Tackling the Front License Plate Issue
Another minor issue I encountered was the front license plate falling off, which got snagged on some tiny trees. Fortunately, it wasn’t a big problem. Initially, I used glue to secure it back in place. However, upon my recent observation, I noticed that double-sided tape is now provided with the kit. I decided to give that a try, and voila, the license plate is now securely attached. Now, the vehicle is fully compliant with legal requirements.
A Curious Nut Situation
While inspecting the vehicle, I noticed something that caught my attention. Upon seeing the nut in the upper section, a thought about the previous incident with the stripped hole and fallen fastener crossed my mind. I pondered if there was a nut in that area during that mishap. Looking closely, I realized that the nut in question is barely holding on, with very few threads securing it in place. This discovery left me wondering if a similar situation had occurred in the past.
In conclusion, while unboxing and test driving the FMS FJ40, I came across some interesting findings. From upgrading the servo arm and servo to addressing the license plate issue and discovering the precariousness of the nut, it’s crucial to be aware of these aspects before hitting the trails. By understanding these potential concerns, you can ensure a smoother and safer off-road experience with this amazing rig!
Fastener Length Issue
Looking at this amazing rig, the FMS FJ40, one cannot help but be impressed. The attention to detail and the overall design is truly remarkable. However, before you hit the trails with this beast, there is something you should watch out for.
Upon closer inspection, I noticed that one of the fasteners on this vehicle needs to be a few millimeters longer. This small issue prevents it from properly locking into the nut. It’s just a minor observation, but something that should be addressed before taking this rig out for a ride.
When examining the threads, it becomes evident that not much of the fastener is going into the nut. This could potentially cause problems on the trail if the nut comes loose. It seems that I may have lost the nut during my last adventure and simply assumed that it threaded into the plastic. However, if they had used a slightly longer screw, this issue would have been avoided.
An Arm Upgrade
While I plan on correcting this issue on my own vehicle, I would highly recommend considering an upgrade for the arm. This way, it will be properly threaded into the plastic once again. Using a slightly longer fastener would eliminate any worries about it coming loose. But even without a longer screw, a metal arm is still a worthwhile upgrade.
It’s important to keep in mind that if you choose not to upgrade the arm, at the very least, install a slightly longer M3 fastener. This will ensure that the threads properly lock into the nut and prevent any mishaps during your epic miles-long hike with this rig.
Differential Housings and Grease
Moving on to the differential housings, I made an interesting observation. The front housing had a bit of grease, while the rear ones had none. To rectify this, I applied some grease provided by the folks at cowrc.
It’s always crucial to have proper lubrication in the differential housings to ensure smooth functioning and minimize wear and tear. So, before you hit the trails, be sure to check the grease levels and apply as needed.
In conclusion, the FMS FJ40 is undeniably an amazing rig. However, it does have a few minor issues that need attention before taking it off-road. By addressing the fastener length issue and considering an arm upgrade, you can enhance the performance and reliability of this remarkable vehicle. Additionally, don’t forget to check and apply grease to the differential housings for a trouble-free trail experience. So get out there and enjoy the adventure, but do so with caution and preparation.
The Impressive Design and Detailing
When it comes to scale-looking and highly detailed trucks, the FMS FJ40 truly stands out. The craftsmanship and attention to detail on this rig are commendable. From the body to the interior, FMS has done an excellent job in capturing the essence of the iconic FJ40. The exterior detailing is on point, and the interior is well-crafted, allowing for an immersive and realistic driving experience.
A Slight Size Controversy
One aspect that may not sit well with some enthusiasts is the size of the body. While these trucks are marketed as 1/10 scale models, in reality, they lean more towards 1/7 scale. This may create a discrepancy when comparing them to other 1/10 scale models on the market. However, the larger size has its advantages when it comes to off-roading capabilities.
Enhanced Off-Roading Experience
The FMS FJ40 is equipped with formidable wheels and beefy tires, allowing it to conquer challenging terrains with ease. The slight increase in size gives this truck an advantage over its 1/10 scale counterparts, as it can handle more rugged and demanding trails. It bridges the gap between 1/10 scale and 1/7 scale models, enabling trail truck enthusiasts to experience the thrills of more capable 1/10 scale crawlers.
An Impressive Performance
The performance of the FMS FJ40 is undeniably impressive. With just a little bit of grease on the ring and pinion gears, the truck’s noise levels have noticeably reduced. This indicates a well-built and reliable transfer case. Overall, this truck has exceeded expectations in terms of performance and durability.
The Chassis
The FMS FJ40 comes with an impressive chassis that offers a solid foundation for off-road adventures. Having tested the platform extensively, I must admit that it performs reasonably well. However, I have encountered a few minor issues with the steering linkage. While the stock electronics are generally sufficient for most ready-to-run crawlers, this particular truck would benefit from some upgrades in that department.
Upgrades Needed
Although the stock set-up allows for some fun driving experiences, it falls short when it comes to slow crawling capabilities. Other ready-to-run crawlers I have reviewed in the past have surpassed this truck in terms of skill and performance. Additionally, the lack of adjustability in the drag brake is a significant drawback. The throttle sensitivity is also something to consider, as it requires finesse and precision to achieve a scale-like appearance while driving. However, I must note that the truck does feel robust and sturdy. All the steering and suspension links are made of metal, which adds to its durability.
Suspension and Bounce
One aspect I particularly enjoy about the FMS FJ40 is its bouncy suspension straight out of the box. Now, I understand that not everyone appreciates this feature, but personally, I find it rather cool to see the truck bouncing around as it traverses the trails. The suspension does a decent job of absorbing impact and providing a bit of excitement during off-road adventures.
Comparisons and Conclusion
While the FMS FJ40 is not a bad platform by any means, it doesn’t quite stack up against similarly priced ready-to-run crawlers in terms of performance and capabilities. There are certainly people who appreciate this rig and enjoy what it has to offer. However, when compared to its competitors, it falls slightly short. Nevertheless, I believe that with the necessary upgrades, particularly in the steering and electronics departments, this rig could reach a whole new level of performance and become a solid contender in the world of off-road RC adventures.
The Body
The body of the FMS FJ40 is of exceptional quality, surpassing some of its similarly priced ready-to-run crawlers. Its attention to detail and realistic design make it a standout choice for those who appreciate scale realism. However, it’s important to note that the body alone may not be enough for a perfect driving experience.
Consider Upgrades
To enhance the driving experience, it is recommended to make a few upgrades. These upgrades don’t have to be top-of-the-line, especially if you primarily use this rig as a trail truck. However, even a little investment in upgrades can go a long way, particularly in terms of the electronics. Upgrading the electronics will not only improve performance but also ensure a smoother and more enjoyable driving experience overall.
Other FMS Options
FMS offers two other similar trucks under their Rock Hobby brand: the Atlas and Mhigan. Both trucks utilize the same chassis as the FJ40 and have visually appealing bodies. While these trucks are not officially licensed, they come at a lower price point of $350. Considering their value, they are worth considering if you are on a tighter budget.
Future Releases
If you are a 1/10 scale crawler fan, there’s good news for you. FMS will soon be introducing an all-new 1/10 scale product to the market. Although this upcoming release may cater to a slightly different audience than the FJ40, it is still worth keeping an eye on. Subscribing to this channel will keep you informed about the latest updates and releases from FMS, ensuring you are among the first to learn about this exciting new product.
In conclusion, the FMS FJ40 is an impressive rig that offers great value for its price. Its attention to scale realism and the potential for upgrades make it an attractive option for enthusiasts. However, it’s essential to consider the additional investments needed to enhance the driving experience. With upcoming releases from FMS, there is even more to look forward to in the world of 1/10 scale crawlers. Stay tuned and subscribe to stay connected with the latest updates.
