Losi Baja Rey 2.0: Desert Truck Review

Losi Baja Rey 2.0: Desert Truck Review

Design and Features

The Losi Baja Rey 2.0 is a desert truck that has already gained popularity on Instagram. Despite not following anyone who owns this truck, I can’t help but notice its increasing presence on social media. Released in 2023, this off-road beast has caught the attention of many enthusiasts, including myself.

Testing and Experience

I have had the privilege of driving the Baja Rey 2.0 for a few weeks now. As someone who owns and tests various short course and desert trucks, I must say that this one has left a lasting impression on me. The first thing that grabbed my attention was its Epic Plush suspension, which promises an exceptional off-road experience.

Performance and Upgrades

Equipped with a 130 amp ESC, similar to the one used in the Losi Tenacity TT Pro, the Baja Rey 2.0 offers an impressive power delivery. However, its 3810 Kv motor sets it apart from its predecessor. With an additional 650 rotations per minute per volt, this truck boasts an incredible level of performance and acceleration. Furthermore, the inclusion of the S614 S Servo with a maximum torque of 15 kg and the reliable dx3 radio adds to the overall functionality of the vehicle.

Unique Suspension System

What truly sets the Baja Rey 2.0 apart is its massive trailing arm suspension. This suspension system ensures unparalleled stability and control, even on the most challenging terrains. The amount of travel this truck can handle is truly astonishing, allowing it to conquer any obstacle in its path with ease.

The Losi Baja Rey 2.0: Desert Truck is a vehicle that caught me by surprise. With its ridiculous appearance, I must admit that I didn’t know much about desert trucks until recently. As someone who has been playing BNG drive for years, I was intrigued when they released a desert truck in one of their recent updates.
After getting my hands on the Losi Baja Rey 2.0, I couldn’t help but think how fun it would be in RC (remote control). I had the opportunity to drive this beast alongside the UDR and my trusty Super Bar High 2.0. Although I haven’t made a video for it yet, I can say that the experience was quite something.
Diving into the technical aspects, the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 comes with an open rear differential. The rear differential is filled with moderately stiff oil, while the front differential is a bit looser. Unlike the UDR, which has a locked rear differential, the Baja Rey 2.0’s rear differential is unlocked. It also features twin shocks in the front and rear, as well as a sway bar. All of these components are located midway up on the trailing arms, ensuring solid performance.
In terms of construction, the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 has a sturdy plastic shaft with steel unis. The battery is conveniently placed, and a small door allows for easy access. The battery sits securely in place once plugged in. The truck also boasts an impressive aluminum lower deck and an upper deck, ensuring durability during intense off-road action.
The independent front suspension of the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 is worth mentioning. It features well-designed ARs and offers a rather decent steering angle. However, I did notice that the servo saver is quite loose out of the box. This may affect precision and control, but it can easily be adjusted by changing the springs.
Overall, the Losi Baja Rey 2.0: Desert Truck is a remarkable vehicle. Its unique design and solid construction make it a beast on any off-road terrain. With its open rear differential and well-positioned components, it offers an exhilarating RC experience. Whether you’re a seasoned RC enthusiast or just starting out, the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 is sure to provide hours of thrilling fun.
One other thing that’s nice about the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 Desert Truck is the inclusion of universals in the front axle, adding to its overall attractiveness. Unlike a standard Short Course Truck, the body of the Baja Rey 2.0 requires the removal of screws on each panel for access. The front panel and cabin panel can be detached, along with the two-piece rear panel. If you’re curious to see this process in action, stay tuned for an upcoming video where I compare the Baja Rey 2.0 to the UDR and the super bajar.
In terms of size, the Baja Rey 2.0 is nearly identical to the armor mve 4S, but it’s the smallest and lightest of the three models. I’ll share my thoughts on driving all three together and discuss which one I liked the most and why. For now, let’s focus on the Baja Rey 2.0 itself.
Now, let me take you over the finer details of this impressive vehicle. Equipped with a 3800 KV brushless motor and a 130 amp ESC, the Baja Rey 2.0 delivers impressive brushless-powered speeds of up to 50 mph. This is a significant power update from the original Baja Rey released in 2016.
The front gearbox and rear axle have been updated, along with improvements to the upper front arm and four-link bar designs. The four-link, trailing arm suspension in the rear, combined with the two upper arms, enhances the vehicle’s performance. These upgrades contribute to a more robust and reliable off-road experience.
When it comes to the chassis, the Baja Rey 2.0 features a 3 mil aluminum Chazzy plate with a 2mm thick aluminum front shock tower. This construction ensures durability and stability, allowing the truck to handle various terrains with ease. The inherent strength of the chassis prevents unwanted flexing, resulting in better overall control during high-speed runs or intense off-road races.
Furthermore, the Baja Rey 2.0 has a long-travel suspension system with large, oil-filled shocks. This setup enables the truck to absorb rough terrain and maintain stability even at high speeds. Whether you’re tackling jumps or plowing through uneven ground, the Baja Rey 2.0 offers a smooth and controlled ride.
To enhance the truck’s handling capabilities, Losi has equipped the Baja Rey 2.0 with a Spektrum DX3 radio system. The DX3 provides precise control and reliable signal transmission, ensuring that the truck responds accurately to your commands. This feature is especially crucial during competitive races or challenging off-road adventures.
As for its appearance, the Baja Rey 2.0 boasts an aggressive and rugged design that captures the essence of a desert truck. From its oversized tires to the detailed exterior, this vehicle exudes power and confidence. Whether you’re racing against friends or simply showing off, the Baja Rey 2.0 will turn heads wherever it goes.
In conclusion, the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 Desert Truck is an impressive off-road vehicle with notable upgrades from its predecessor. Its brushless motor, updated gearbox, and improved suspension system ensure a thrilling and capable performance. With its durable chassis and attention-grabbing design, the Baja Rey 2.0 is a must-have for RC enthusiasts looking for a high-speed, off-road adventure.

Design and Features

The Losi Baja Rey 2.0: Desert Truck boasts impressive features that make it a standout in its class. With a 5 mil Upper Deck, sealed Metal Gear transmission and differentials, this truck allows for easy tuning. The three differentials can be adjusted by adding different oils, giving drivers the ability to fine-tune their performance to their liking.

Easy Access and Roll Cage

One notable aspect of the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 is the ease of access to its motor and battery. These components can be easily accessed from underneath the truck. Additionally, the truck features a full roll cage for added safety and protection. The roll cage panels can be removed with a number of screws, although the process is not too laborious.

Impressive Wheels and Tires

The Losi Baja Rey 2.0 comes equipped with licensed Method 101 race wheels. These wheels are paired with BF Goodridge tires featuring the kr3 tread. The truck also includes two fully functional dual spare tires, adding to its realistic design. For those who enjoy driving the truck at night, there are functional LED light bars installed across the top.

Enhanced Suspension

The truck features a reliable suspension system, with improvements made to the Upper Front arms. To further enhance the suspension, Losi has included a secondary damping shock. While the sales copy suggests that the front arms can accept a secondary damping shock, in reality, the truck comes with one already installed. This additional shock adds extra dampening to the suspension, which is beneficial for a truck that works hard. However, it’s worth noting that the shocks tend to warm up during use.

Battery Compatibility

The Losi Baja Rey 2.0 is compatible with various batteries. The writer of this review uses a 6000mAh, 3-cell ADC Z battery with a hard case. To access the battery, there is a panel located on the truck, and it opens through a door. The suspension may need to be compressed to fully insert the battery brick. Accessing the motor is also straightforward, requiring the removal of just three screws.

Nice Modular Design

The Losi Baja Rey 2.0: Desert Truck boasts a nice modular design that adds to its overall appeal. This design feature has proven to be quite beneficial during my time of testing and running this vehicle. Surprisingly, I have not had the need to remove any of the covers, apart from out of sheer curiosity. This goes to show that the car has been performing admirably, living up to its reputation as a scale driver car.

Scale Driver Experience

When enthusiasts refer to the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 as a scale driver, they mean that it is not a vehicle where you can go all out and drive it to its limits like you would with a Short Course Truck. This characteristic, while initially perplexing, presents a unique driving experience that requires a more controlled and careful approach. Over the past couple of months, I have been driving various short course trucks extensively, and getting used to the nuances of the Losi Baja Rey has been an interesting challenge.

Top Speed Performance

One aspect of the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 that I wanted to explore was its top speed capabilities. With the battery fully charged, I had the opportunity to push the throttle to its limits and see what this truck is capable of. As I rolled on the throttle to 50%, the truck accelerated impressively. And with a full 100% throttle, I experienced the exhilarating rush of adrenaline that comes with high-speed driving. However, my fear of braking too late during a test run led to an unfortunate incident.

An Unfortunate Accident

During one of my test runs, I misjudged a turn and ended up colliding with a sharp and solid stump. The impact was significant, the kind that would have spelled disaster for a car from the past. Unfortunately, this resulted in some damage to the truck’s body. The impact occurred precisely on a stump that posed no functional harm to the vehicle. Although disappointed about the damage to the gorgeous body, I am relieved that the crucial components remained intact and protected.

Durable Plastic Frame

Despite the minor mishap, I must commend the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 for its durable plastic frame. The construction includes a bar that spans the length of the frame, providing additional support and rigidity. The overall design showcases the manufacturer’s commitment to building a robust and reliable off-road truck that can withstand the demands of intense off-roading.

The Losi Baja Rey 2.0: Desert Truck, with its nice modular design and scale driver characteristics, offers a unique and controlled driving experience. While it may not be suitable for extreme off-roading, it excels in providing a thrilling and enjoyable ride. Despite the unfortunate accident, the truck’s durable plastic frame ensures long-lasting performance and the ability to withstand rough terrains.

Structure and Durability

The Losi Baja Rey 2.0: Desert Truck certainly impresses with its sturdy construction. As I examined the body, I noticed a few dents in the lexon material. However, I was surprised to find that despite these dents, the truck remained structurally sound. In fact, I would go so far as to say that most short course trucks would have been completely destroyed by the impact that the Baja Rey 2.0 endured. This is a testament to the impressive build quality of this vehicle.

Performance

Being slightly unfamiliar with the area, I found it a little challenging to drive the truck at full speed. Perhaps the space was a bit too small for such a powerful vehicle, or maybe my skills were not up to par. Regardless, I made sure to handle the truck with caution, mindful of not toppling it over.

The rear wheel of the Baja Rey 2.0 requires extra care, as it tends to make the entire car more prone to rolling. However, this slight inconvenience is compensated by the mesmerizing suspension system. With every bump and jump, the wheels of this truck elegantly work their way up and down, showcasing the exceptional engineering that went into its design.

Durability and Maintenance

After several battery pack cycles, I can confidently say that the Baja Rey 2.0 is built to last. It has endured numerous drives without sustaining any significant damage. Today, however, I unintentionally rammed it into the sharp side of a stick, resulting in a minor cosmetic issue. The wheels of the truck also leave their mark on the body, scraping away at the paint. It would be beneficial to have a plastic fender positioned just below the body at the same height, as this would provide a protective barrier for the wheels and prevent the paint from wearing off prematurely.

The AVC Feature

The Losi Baja Rey 2.0 Desert Truck comes equipped with AVC, or Active Vehicle Control, which is a feature that can be turned on or off. Upon receiving the truck, the AVC was set at 50%, but I decided to switch it off completely. Although turning it off might worsen the handling, it is worth noting that live axle vehicles have a natural tendency to oversteer when pushed beyond their limits.

Handling and Control

When the truck is thrown into a drift, there isn’t much you can do unless you have traction or you can counter steer into the slide. Stepping on the gas and steering simultaneously can help regain control. However, compared to a Short Course Truck, the Baja Rey 2.0 feels a bit more serious and requires additional finesse to handle.

ABC – Aiding Learning Drivers

For those who are still learning how to drive, the AVC can be a useful tool. It doesn’t mean that you are giving up on learning; rather, it enhances the overall driving experience. By turning on the AVC, the truck becomes more enjoyable to handle.

Is It for You?

After observing the performance and appearance of the Losi Baja Rey 2.0, you might be wondering if this type of RC truck is suitable for you. If you find yourself captivated by its impressive looks, the size of its wheels, and the way it rolls, then this truck might be the perfect fit for you. The sight of the dust plume trailing behind as the wheels spin adds to its allure.

However, if you prefer a more aggressive driving style where you can thrash a car around, a Short Course Truck might be better suited for you. A recommended alternative that shares a similar size and appearance to the Baja Rey 2.0 is the Maave 4S. It offers increased speed and durability, making it more suitable for those who enjoy pushing their vehicles to their limits.

In conclusion, whether you choose the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 or opt for a different RC truck, it ultimately depends on your preferences and driving style. Consider your options carefully and choose the truck that resonates most with you.

Design and Appearance

The Losi Baja Rey 2.0 desert truck may not be the most visually appealing vehicle on the market. Its appearance doesn’t quite match its performance capabilities. The design seems a bit off, lacking the desired aesthetic appeal. Perhaps, with some time and adjustments, it could grow on me. However, the current look doesn’t inspire much confidence.

Handling and Performance

Driving this truck is undeniably fun. Despite its flaws in appearance, it handles well on the terrain. Desert trucks are naturally inclined to nose down in mid-air while jumping, and unfortunately, this truck exacerbates that tendency further. This can make for a slightly tricky experience when maneuvering through jumps and landings. Care and caution are necessary to avoid damaging the vehicle.

Durability and Build Quality

During my test drive, I encountered a slight mishap. When I picked up the truck, I unintentionally exerted too much force, causing a plastic part near the lexon to break. It’s a pity because the body of the truck has proven to be resilient, withstanding my less-than-perfect driving skills. Except for the incident with a sharp log that caused some damage to the side, the substructure was able to protect the vehicle.

Battery Life and Drivetrain

Using a full 6 amp battery pack, I was able to enjoy approximately 20 minutes of continuous driving. I’m only able to showcase a portion of the footage to avoid extending the video too much. The drivetrain seems to handle the demands well, as the differential and the motor both displayed signs of warmth. However, feeling a hot metal base suggests that it may also function as a heat sink, which aids in keeping the running gear cool. It’s worth noting that the heat does get close to being too hot for comfort.

Overall, the Losi Baja Rey 2.0 desert truck review reveals its mixed performance. While it may not excel in terms of design or durability, it offers a fun driving experience and is capable of handling various terrains. If you can overlook its flaws, this truck can provide hours of entertainment.
