Cross RC EMO NT4 Review & Test
Waterproof Concerns
I had initially assumed that the x6f receiver on the Cross RC EMO NT4 was waterproof. However, upon disassembling it after it stopped working, I discovered that it was just a naked board. This came as a surprise to me, as I had submerged the receiver a few times during our playtime, and it had been cutting out since then. I had taken precautions by sorting out the antenna before it even got wet, but I am still unsure of the exact problem. Upon my return, I plan to try a different receiver to see if that resolves the issue. Consider yourself warned about the potential waterproofing concerns.
Exciting Features
One of the exciting aspects of the Cross RC EMO NT4 is that it is available as both a ready-to-run (RTR) model and a kit. I opted for the RTR version, which turned out to be lightweight and easy to handle. It feels similar to a drx4 or any other comparable model in terms of weight and build. Additionally, the package includes a few spare tools and parts, as well as a branded 4 gig USB drive. The drive contains a compressed but amusing video about the truck, adding a touch of humor to the overall experience.
User-Friendly Controller
The Cross RC EMO NT4 comes with a dumbo RC X4 controller, which offers throttle, steering, two-speed, and differential lock controls. The differential lock in this case is an all-or-nothing standard feature. The controller also provides options for trim, reverse, and end points. It operates on four AA batteries, keeping it simple and user-friendly.
Durable Construction
The Cross RC EMO NT4 boasts a 313 mil wheelbase and features a sturdy ctype steel frame ladder chassis. Its solid axle suspension system ensures stability, while the stainless steel link rods contribute to its durability. The Attractive Design
One standout thing I really like about the Cross RC EMO NT4 is the attractive design. The ABS plastic wheel wells add a stylish touch to the truck’s overall look. The thought put into the design is evident, and it enhances the truck’s appeal. Initially, I considered getting a new back for it, but the little bed it has is quite attractive, so I’m happy to keep it as it is.
Nylon Skid and Velcro Components
The Cross RC EMO NT4 comes with a nylon skid, which I appreciate. It adds durability to the car and ensures it can handle rough terrain. Another interesting thing I noticed is that the components are all velcroed on as part of the installation process. This is not a complaint, just an observation. It makes the installation convenient and easy to manage.
Impressive Flex and Battery Tray
This car has quite a bit of flex to it, which is a great feature. It allows for better maneuverability and control while driving. Additionally, the battery tray is generously sized. It can fit a 6 amp 3s battery hard case with plenty of room to spare. If you need even more space, you can easily pull out the tray and adjust it to accommodate batteries of various lengths.
Pre-loaded Suspension Set
The pre-loaded suspension ensures that the Cross RC EMO NT4 sits down nicely and is ready for action. The suspension is set to the right level, providing a smooth and comfortable ride. This attention to detail adds to the overall quality of the car.

Cross RC EMO NT4 Review & Test
Low Gear Challenge
The Cross RC EMO NT4 is an impressive RC car, but there are a few challenges that need to be addressed. One of the main issues is its low gear performance. When locked, the car tends to struggle, making it difficult to maneuver. However, the tires provided by Cross RC are exceptional, providing excellent traction and grip.
Weighted Wheels
To improve the performance of the EMO NT4, weighted wheels would be a great addition. The car tends to be front-heavy, which affects its stability on rocky terrains. By adding weighted wheels, the car would have a better balance and could stay higher on rocks, making it easier to navigate obstacles.
Adjusting Gear Ratio
Another aspect that needs attention is the gear ratio. The EMO NT4 is geared a bit high for many users’ liking. It would be beneficial to have a slower gear option, especially when crawling over challenging terrains. Using a lower gear ratio would allow for better control and precision.
Center of Gravity
Due to the high center of gravity, the EMO NT4 might face difficulties in maintaining stability. However, the front bumper’s ability to squish on rocks gives the user some leverage. With a 56-degree approach angle and a 66-degree departure angle, the car has good potential for tackling rough terrains.
Improved Control
To enhance control over the EMO NT4, additional drag brake is necessary. The stock wp 1060 ESC is sufficient for most cars, but the EMO NT4 could benefit from an upgrade, such as the 1080 ESC or the lesser-known but highly capable Charisma Ark 2 ESC. These options provide more control and responsiveness, making it easier to maneuver the car in challenging situations.
In conclusion, the Cross RC EMO NT4 is a robust and capable RC car, but it does require some adjustments to maximize its performance. With the addition of weighted wheels, a lower gear ratio, and improved control through a different ESC, the EMO NT4 can overcome its challenges and provide an even more enjoyable crawling experience.
Rock Problems
The Cross RC EMO NT4 is put to the test with a series of rock obstacles. These challenges are designed to showcase the vehicle’s capabilities straight out of the box. The aim is not to complete each problem flawlessly, but rather to observe how the EMO NT4 handles the obstacles and whether it succeeds or fails.
Impressive Clearance
The EMO NT4 is equipped with portals and large 120 mil tires, providing ample clearance even with the faux fuel tanks on the side. This feature allows the vehicle to easily clear the first rock hurdle, demonstrating its capability to maneuver on challenging terrain.
A Slight Hiccup
During one of the rock problems, there is a momentary interruption when the driver adjusts the camera angle. This pause gives the truck an unfair advantage, as it allows the driver to readjust and regain control. However, after returning to the original position and staying on the throttle, the EMO NT4 resumes its progress effortlessly.
Overcoming Obstacles
Despite a minor hiccup earlier, the EMO NT4 continues to impress as it conquers problem four without hesitation. The driver decides to unlock and lock the vehicle at this point, perhaps to showcase its versatility. In doing so, the front left side catches a bit, but the truck manages to maintain balance and successfully completes the obstacle. The suspension damping and overall performance are impressive right out of the box.
A Promising Performance
The Cross RC EMO NT4 demonstrates its capabilities through these rock obstacles. The vehicle’s clearance, stability, and suspension performance are noteworthy, showcasing a well-designed and reliable off-road vehicle. It performs admirably even without any modifications, making it a promising choice for enthusiasts looking for a capable off-road RC truck.
Cross RC EMO NT4 Review & Test
Clearance and Bumper
This is a problem. The first bit doesn’t seem to be an issue with all the clearance it has. Surprisingly, it looks easier than usual. However, getting the front of the vehicle onto the next section can be quite challenging, especially with the bumper being plastic. Despite that, the bumper offers ample clearance, which is actually something I like in this case.
Maneuvering Difficulties
Now, let’s pause and change the camera before continuing. I wonder if we can unlock it, no. Just a slight adjustment is needed to bring the front around properly. It seems that I’m not quite lined up, so I need to come back a little bit more. There we go, all right. Well, now we have it.
Gearing Challenges
What’s really going to make things hard for this truck is its high gearing. It has a 10:1 pin, which I think should be reconsidered. Perhaps trying a 9:1 pin or even going down to 2s would be a better option. Another suggestion would be to use a larger spur gear, like a 52-tooth one. I’m not sure what it’s compatible with, but Cross RC is known for providing spare options and parts. The challenge here lies in the truck’s center of gravity, paired with its high gearing. In retrospect, I should have used 2s instead of 3s because I don’t think this truck was designed to work this hard.
Weight Modifications
To improve the performance, using heavier wheels or adding brass on the axles could be considered. This would help lower the center of gravity and provide better stability during challenging maneuvers.
Remember, the Cross RC EMO NT4 is a great RC truck overall, but it does come with its own unique set of challenges. With some modifications and adjustments, it can be a formidable off-road machine.
Cross RC EMO NT4 Review & Test
Off-Road Performance
Despite its lightweight construction, the Cross RC EMO NT4 proves to be a capable off-road vehicle. It effortlessly tackles rough terrains and climbs steep inclines with ease. The suspension system provides adequate handling, although the tires could benefit from more squish to improve traction.
Challenges
The car faces its first challenge, a daunting obstacle known as problem five. With cautious driving, the EMO NT4 overcomes it successfully. The next test, problem six, raises doubts about the stock loadout’s capability. However, the EMO NT4 surprises us yet again by conquering the challenge.
Limitations and Servo Fade
On this particularly hot day, the EMO NT4 experiences some servo fade due to the demanding driving conditions. The lightweight construction, although durable, struggles to handle the stress. The center of gravity is slightly higher than desired, partly because of the plastic components and non-squishable tires.
Durability and Tough Drivetrain
In terms of durability, the EMO NT4 exceeds expectations. Modern RC vehicles have significantly improved their durability compared to older models. The tough drivetrain of the EMO NT4 ensures that breaking components is not a major concern even under harsh driving conditions.
Modification for Better Performance
To improve performance, one option is to slow down the EMO NT4 by using a 2s battery instead of a more powerful 3s. Additionally, switching to a 9 to pinion and opting for a higher turn motor can help fine-tune the vehicle’s speed and power. This modification allows for a more controlled driving experience.
Motor and Power
The Cross RC EMO NT4 comes equipped with a 540 motor, specifically a 35 turn 540. While this motor provides decent performance, it is suggested that users consider upgrading to a more powerful option such as a 45 turn or even a 27 or 35ish turn 550 motor. This upgrade would greatly enhance the overall performance of the crawler and make it a force to be reckoned with.
Fusion 1200
After careful consideration, the Fusion 1200 emerges as a strong contender for motor upgrade. This option is highly recommended as it promises to provide a significant boost in power and performance. With the Fusion 1200 installed, the Cross RC EMO NT4 will surely exceed expectations and deliver an exhilarating and satisfying experience.
Capability
It must be noted that the Cross RC EMO NT4 does not boast the same level of capability out of the box as its counterpart, the EMO 84. However, do not be quick to dismiss this crawler. By adding some weight to the wheels and slowing it down a bit, the EMO NT4 can achieve impressive performance levels. With a few tweaks and modifications, this crawler can easily surpass its initial limitations.
Feature-rich
The EMO NT4 is generously equipped with a range of features commonly found in other top-tier crawlers. It shares similarities with the renowned ter X4 type cars, which have gained popularity in recent times. This crawler offers an impressive package at an affordable price, making it the ideal choice for budget-conscious enthusiasts. It is a ready-to-run car that requires minimal additional modifications, saving both time and money.
Headlights
One notable feature of the EMO NT4 is the inclusion of front and rear headlights. This addition not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the crawler but also contributes to improved visibility during night-time or low-light conditions. The presence of headlights adds an extra touch of sophistication and practicality to an already feature-packed crawler.

The Cross RC EMO NT4 is a beast of a machine. With a stunning design and robust features, this RC truck is built to conquer any terrain that comes its way. One notable feature is the absence of headlights, which might seem odd to some, but it actually adds to the unique appeal of this vehicle. You don’t have to worry about any wiring or installing lights, it’s all set to go right out of the box.
Another impressive aspect of the EMO NT4 is its durability. This rough and ready machine is built to withstand the harshest conditions. No matter how challenging the terrain, this RC truck is ready to take on any obstacle with ease. The sturdy construction ensures that you can push the limits of off-roading without worrying about any damage.
The Mirrors and Glass
One particular detail that caught my attention is the inclusion of glass mirrors. It’s a small touch, but it adds a level of realism to the overall design. The mirrors not only serve their purpose but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the EMO NT4. This attention to detail is commendable and sets this RC truck apart from its competitors.
