Introduction
Now this is going to be a full-on contest between three rally cars – the Carisma M48S, CEN Racing Puma Rally 1, and HPI WR8 Flux. It’s not just about performance and driving, there’s more to it. This won’t be a simple video shot, as you’ll have to follow the series or the playlist to fully understand it. I plan on breaking this competition down into five different categories: price, quality, parts availability, on-tarmac performance, and on-dirt performance. In the end, there will be a final video to determine the winner using a three-part metal system.
The Contestants
Let’s talk about the first contestant, the newcomer – the Carisma M48S. This is an eighth-scale rally car. Hopefully, you’ve seen the first thoughts video where I shared my initial impressions of this car. However, I haven’t driven it yet, so the shootout will be the first time behind the wheel. It’s worth noting that this car is not box stock. I’ve already made some modifications, specifically swapping out the ESC. I didn’t think it would be fair to have this car compete with the stock ESC, as it simply wasn’t powerful enough. Now, it’s running a 100 amp ESC.
The second contender is the CEN Racing Puma Rally 1. This car is the only one that remains completely stock in this competition. It’s going in as-is, without any modifications. It will be interesting to see how it performs against the other modified cars.
Price and Quality
When it comes to price, these cars fall within a similar range. However, the Carisma M48S falls on the higher end of the spectrum due to its exceptional build quality. The materials used and attention to detail make it stand out from the rest. On the other hand, the CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 offers good quality at a more affordable price point. It strikes a balance between cost and performance.
Parts Availability
In terms of parts availability, both the Carisma M48S and HPI WR8 Flux have a wide range of aftermarket options. This means that enthusiasts can easily find and upgrade various components to suit their preferences. However, the CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 may have slightly limited options, being a less popular brand in the rally racing scene.
On-Tarmac Performance
Now, let’s focus on performance. On tarmac, the HPI WR8 Flux excels with its powerful motor and precise handling. Its speed and agility make it a force to be reckoned with on any paved surface. The Carisma M48S holds its ground as well, thanks to its modified ESC and overall solid performance. The CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 may not have the same out-of-the-box performance as the other two, but its design allows for potential upgrades to enhance its on-tarmac capabilities.
On-Dirt Performance
When it comes to off-road performance, the Carisma M48S proves its worth with its impressive handling and traction. The modified ESC gives it an extra edge when maneuvering through various terrains. The HPI WR8 Flux also holds its own, delivering a thrilling off-road experience with its powerful motor and versatile suspension. While the C
Pricing
Of the three cars being compared, the HPI WR8 Flux comes in as the most expensive option, with a price tag of $499.99. The CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 follows closely behind at $459.99, while the Carisma M48S is the most affordable option at $369.99. It’s worth noting that the price of the Carisma M48S may be affected by the need to swap out the ESC, but for the purposes of this comparison, we’ll consider it at its stock price.
Quality
When it comes to quality, all three cars perform admirably. It’s important to highlight that none of these RCs come equipped with any stability system, gyro, or throttle management. This means that the performance of these cars is solely reliant on raw throttle and steering control.
Carisma M48S
The Carisma M48S is a nice car that delivers a good performance. While it may not have the highest price tag, it doesn’t compromise on quality. The stock tires that come with the car provide a solid grip, ensuring good traction during rally events. Its affordability coupled with its performance makes it an attractive option.
CEN Racing Puma Rally 1
The CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 offers a slightly more elevated experience with a higher price tag. Its performance is commendable, and it competes well with the other two cars in this lineup. The stock tires provide a reliable grip, allowing for precise control on various surfaces. Overall, the CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 is a solid choice for rally enthusiasts.
HPI WR8 Flux
Although the HPI WR8 Flux comes in as the most expensive option, its performance justifies the price. This car excels in delivering an exhilarating rally experience. The stock wheels and tires may not be exceptional, but they still offer a decent grip for the car’s power. With its superior performance and build quality, the HPI WR8 Flux is a worthy contender in the rally shootout.
In conclusion, all three cars – the Carisma M48S, CEN Racing Puma Rally 1, and HPI WR8 Flux – offer quality performance in the world of rally racing. While the Carisma M48S stands as the most affordable option, the CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 offers a slightly more elevated experience. At the top end, the HPI WR8 Flux delivers an exhilarating rally experience, justifying its higher price tag. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference and budget, but rest assured that any of these cars will provide a thrilling rally shootout experience.
Carisma M48S
The Carisma M48S is a rally car that stands out in the lineup due to its unique features. Unlike the other models, it is equipped with a tower to tower brace, which adds to its overall build quality. Additionally, it does not use a metal chassis, setting it apart from the rest. However, one downside is the lack of adjustability in the battery tray, limiting customization options. Most of the parts used in this car are composite, and it comes with a 60 amp ESC. The tires on the M48S feel okay, but they may not be as good as those on the other two cars in terms of compound.
CEN Racing Puma Rally 1
The CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 is another option to consider in the rally car shootout. While its performance is not discussed here, it is worth mentioning that the focus is solely on the build quality and durability. The Puma Rally 1 does not feature a tower to tower brace like the M48S, but it does come with coil over screw-down shocks, which is definitely a plus. The use of composite links throughout the car adds to its overall strength and reliability. It is worth noting that the Puma Rally 1 utilizes a G10 chassis, which may be considered a downside for some. However, the overall build quality seems solid, and it does not use Phillips head screws, which is a positive aspect.
HPI WR8 Flux
Last but not least, we have the HPI WR8 Flux. This rally car also lacks an introduction to its performance, focusing solely on the build quality. Just like the Puma Rally 1, it does not have a tower to tower brace, but it does offer coil over screw-down shocks. The use of composite materials, including composite shock towers, ensures a sturdy and durable build. The chassis of the WR8 Flux is made of G10, similar to the Puma Rally 1. However, unlike the previous two cars, it does not utilize Phillips head screws, which may be seen as an advantage.
In conclusion, the three rally cars – Carisma M48S, CEN Racing Puma Rally 1, and HPI WR8 Flux – each have their own unique features when it comes to build quality and durability. It is important to consider these aspects along with performance when making a decision on which rally car to choose for your RC adventures.
Carisma M48S
The Carisma M48S is an impressive rally car that stands out from the rest with its unique features. One notable aspect is the use of Phillips head screws instead of the more commonly used hex screws. While this may seem unusual to some, it does not pose any problems. The motor dog bones in the M48S are also sturdy and durable, with no concerns of them getting dented or damaged during action-packed rallies.
CEN Racing Puma Rally 1
The CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 has a few interesting characteristics that make it a contender in the rally shootout. One notable feature is the sway bar, which is a bit unusual. It seems that there is nothing locking it on one side, which may raise some questions about its stability and performance. However, it is difficult to fully assess this from the camera angle provided.
One commendable aspect of the Puma Rally 1 is the usage of mod one gears, giving it an edge over its competitors. These gears are known for their reliability and strength, adding to the overall appeal of this rally car.
HPI WR8 Flux
The HPI WR8 Flux is a rally car with some distinct features that set it apart. Its composite side guards and shock towers contribute to its durability and stability. Despite lacking a sway bar, the WR8 Flux compensates with its Max 10 system, which ensures optimal performance.
One standout feature of this car is the direct drive system, eliminating the need for a slipper clutch or center diff. Although this may be unconventional, it enhances the car’s agility and responsiveness during rallies.
The tire compound on the WR8 Flux feels exceptional, offering excellent grip on various surfaces. Additionally, adjustable links can be found throughout the car, providing flexibility in customization. The use of dog bones, as well as composite Big Bore shocks, further enhances its performance.
Concluding Thoughts
In this rally shootout, each car brings its unique strengths and weaknesses to the table. The Carisma M48S impresses with its unconventional Phillips head screws and durable motor dog bones. The CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 stands out with its use of mod one gears, despite the peculiar sway bar situation. Finally, the HPI WR8 Flux catches attention with its direct drive system and well-performing tire compound.
Ultimately, the choice between these rally cars will depend on personal preferences and specific needs. Whether it’s durability, speed, or customization options, each car offers features that cater to different rally enthusiasts. So, get ready to hit the tracks and experience the thrill of rally racing with these impressive machines.
The Carisma M48S
The Carisma M48S in the Rally Shootout definitely catches the eye. Its appearance is quite impressive, with a stunning design that is sure to turn heads. The sleek and stylish look of this car is undoubtedly one of its strongest attributes.
HPI WR8 Flux
Moving on to the HPI WR8, it boasts a strong and sturdy build. The metal chassis and composite side guards provide extra durability and protection. The adjustable battery tray and extensive metal bracing throughout the car add to its robustness. The shock towers are made of stamped aluminum, contributing to its solid structure. The tire compound on the HPI WR8 is widely regarded as one of the best in the industry, providing excellent grip and performance.
CEN Racing Puma Rally 1
The CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 also does not disappoint when it comes to quality. It showcases a mix of fixed and adjustable links and features clip adjustable shocks. Although it may not have as much metal bracing as the HPI WR8, it still offers a solid and reliable chassis. The tire compound on the CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 is commendable, providing a great feel and traction on various surfaces.
Controller Quality
In terms of controller quality, the Carisma M48S takes the lead. Its throttle and steering feel smooth and responsive, even though the controller itself is primarily made of plastic. However, it doesn’t hinder the overall performance and handling of the M48S.
In conclusion, the Rally Shootout between the Carisma M48S, HPI WR8 Flux, and CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 showcases their individual strengths in terms of design, build, and performance. Whether it be the stunning looks of the Carisma M48S, the robust construction of the HPI WR8 Flux, or the reliable performance of the CEN Racing Puma Rally 1, each car has something unique to offer in the exciting world of rally racing.
Carisma M48S – Trim Settings and Controller
The Carisma M48S comes with a controller that offers most of your trim settings, allowing you to adjust various aspects of your car’s performance. It includes throttle trim, steering trim, reverse settings for both throttle and steering, and a dual rate for steering. Unfortunately, there is no dual rate option for the throttle. Despite being made of plastic, the controller feels firm and comfortable in the hand. Its backside is slightly roughed up, which enhances the grip. Although plasticky, the throttle operates smoothly and provides a decent amount of travel.
CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 – Basic Controller
The controller that comes with the CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 is quite basic. The throttle feels okay, featuring a rubber wheel with a little bit of travel. It lacks the dual rate option for steering, unlike the Carisma M48S controller. However, it does provide the necessary trim settings for steering and throttle. Although it may seem basic in terms of design and feel, the inclusion of all the trims speaks highly of its functionality.
HPI WR8 Flux – Controller Upgrade
When evaluating the HPI WR8 Flux, it’s important to note that I am not rating the controller that came with it, but instead the controller that accompanies it now. The original controller, known as the tf41, features a nice foam wheel with a drop-down mechanism. This upgraded controller offers every trim option imaginable. It allows adjustments for throttle, steering, dual rates, and even includes a third channel that may not see much use. The foam wheel feels premium and provides a fantastic grip, enhancing the overall controller experience.
In conclusion, each of these rally cars comes with its own controller, offering varying levels of functionality and comfort. The Carisma M48S impresses with its range of trim settings, despite its plasticky feel. The CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 may seem basic in design, but it includes all the necessary trims for a satisfactory performance. The HPI WR8 Flux stands out with its upgraded controller, featuring a foam wheel and a wide array of trim options for unparalleled customization.
Carisma M48S
The Carisma M48S is equipped with a handle flip-up antenna, which adds to its overall appeal and functionality. Despite its plastic material, the handle feels remarkably sturdy and comfortable. Additionally, it boasts the inclusion of the tf50, a drop-down wheel controller that offers various trims and adjustments. This controller provides a range of options, including end points for throttle and steering, steering trim, throttle trim, and steering dual rate. Its rubberized grip and smooth throttle operation further enhance the overall experience.
CEN Racing Puma Rally 1
The CEN Racing Puma Rally 1, on the other hand, falls short in terms of controller quality. While the chassis itself is commendable, the controller lacks the finesse found in the Carisma M48S. The controller’s subpar performance is the primary reason for this deduction. However, when considering the chassis quality alone, the Puma Rally 1 is still a strong contender.
HPI WR8 Flux
The HPI WR8 Flux model features the tf50 controller, which rivals the Carisma M48S in terms of quality and innovation. Specifically designed for left-handed drivers, this controller offers adjustability and convenience. The foam wheel is comfortable to grip, and the rubber grommets located at the bottom firmly anchor the controller to any surface. With its exceptional functionality and design, the WR8 Flux is undoubtedly a standout in this rally shootout.
Carisma M48S
The Carisma M48S is a contender in the rally shootout and it is deserving of recognition. While it may not have taken first place in this particular category, it definitely deserves a bronze. The M48S may not have all the bells and whistles like an ESC included, but it holds its own when it comes to stock features.
CEN Racing Puma Rally 1
Next up is the CEN Racing Puma Rally 1, a strong competitor in the rally shootout. While it didn’t take home the silver in this category, it certainly has a lot to offer. The Puma Rally 1 may lack some additional features like an included ESC, but it is impressive in its stock form.
HPI WR8 Flux
Finally, we come to the HPI WR8 Flux, a force to be reckoned with in the rally shootout. This RC car takes home the silver in this category, and for good reason. The WR8 Flux excels in both build quality and design. The attention to detail is apparent, particularly in the paint quality and likeness to a real Subaru. HPI truly hit the mark with this one.
Now, let’s shift our focus to the scale aspect of these RC cars.
Scalen – Body Comparison
When it comes to determining scale, the bodies of the RC cars play a crucial role. In this category, we will solely focus on the appearance and design of the shells. Starting with the WR8, even though it may show signs of wear, it still impresses with its overall look. HPI did an excellent job in capturing the essence of a Subie, from the paint quality to the details like the wing and clear windows. The WR8’s body is undeniably attractive and showcases HPI’s commitment to realistic styling.
Moving on to the Carisma M48S, this RC car may not have the flashiest body, but it still holds its own in terms of scale. While the chassis may not be a factor in determining scale, the overall presentation of the M48S gives off a realistic impression. Despite not being the standout in this category, Carisma did a decent job in delivering a visually appealing shell.
Lastly, we have the CEN Racing Puma Rally 1. Unfortunately, the body of this RC car does not leave a lasting impression. It may not have the same level of detail and finesse as its competitors. While it may not be the frontrunner in terms of scale, the Puma Rally 1 still manages to offer a decent representation.
In conclusion, the rally shootout between the Carisma M48S, CEN Racing Puma Rally 1, and HPI WR8 Flux proves that each RC car has its own strengths and weaknesses. While the WR8 takes the silver in the body category, the Carisma M48S and CEN Racing Puma Rally 1 demonstrate their own merits. Whether it’s the attention to detail, stock features, or overall presentation, each RC car offers something unique to the world of rally racing enthusiasts.
The Puma Rally One
The Puma Rally One is one of the newer RCs that have been recently released, and boy does it look good. I mean, really good. The attention to detail is impressive, with scale bits such as mirrors on the back and venting on the sides. Even the venting on the top of the car is wonderfully designed. CEN Racing did an excellent job with the Puma Rally One, the shiny new Subie from Carisma. I have to say, guys, this RC looks really, really good. Carisma always does a good job with their bodies, and they definitely did not disappoint with this one.
Meticulous Design
One thing that stood out to me is the rear wing of the Puma Rally One. It is actually a molded composite that matches seamlessly with the rest of the body. To be able to achieve such a close match with lexan paint is truly commendable. On the other hand, the HPI WR8 Flux falls short in this aspect. The wing of the WR8 doesn’t quite match the paint on the rest of the body. For scale enthusiasts like myself, this attention to detail is crucial. Therefore, in terms of scale accuracy, I would give the gold medal to the Puma Rally One, the silver to the Charisma, and the bronze to the WR8.
Parts Availability
Now let’s talk about parts availability, which can vary depending on where you are in the world. However, for the purposes of this comparison, let’s consider a single source for purchasing the RCs and their parts. All three of these RCs, the Puma Rally One, the Carisma M48S, and the HPI WR8 Flux, can be purchased from Hobby Recreation Products, and the parts for all of them are available from the same source.
It’s important to note that parts availability is a crucial consideration for RC enthusiasts. There’s nothing worse than having your favorite RC car break down and not being able to find the necessary replacement parts. Rest assured, with Hobby Recreation Products, you won’t have to worry about that. They offer a wide range of parts for all three of these RCs, ensuring that you can keep your car in top-notch condition.
In conclusion, the Puma Rally One, the Carisma M48S, and the HPI WR8 Flux are all impressive RC cars, but they each have their own strengths. The Puma Rally One stands out for its meticulous design and attention to detail, taking home the gold in terms of scale accuracy. When it comes to parts availability, Hobby Recreation Products has you covered for all three of these RCs. Whether you choose the Puma Rally One, the Carisma M48S, or the HPI WR8 Flux, you can rest assured that you’ll have a blast racing and enjoying these top-notch RC cars.
Rally Shootout – Carisma M48S
At the time of this video, the Puma Rally One is not in stock. It seems that the demand for this particular model is quite high, causing it to be sold out at the moment. On the other hand, the Carisma M48S is currently available for purchase. However, it is worth noting that this model only recently became available after a significant waiting period. Originally scheduled for release in September, it is now November, and there may still be delays when you watch this video.
CEN Racing Puma Rally One
Unfortunately, the CEN Racing Puma Rally One is not in stock at the moment. While it may be possible to find third-party parts for the WR8, the same cannot be said for the Puma Rally One. It seems that this particular model is based on an older platform, with limited availability of aftermarket components. Despite being a newer model as of 2023, there are still very few options when it comes to spare parts for the Puma Rally One.
HPI WR8 Flux
The HPI WR8 Flux is another popular rally car, and it appears to be in high demand as well. Just like the Puma Rally One, it is currently not in stock. However, there is some good news for potential WR8 owners. This model is more likely to have third-party parts available, making it easier to customize and upgrade. While the options may not be extensive, they are still relatively better compared to the other two models.
Rally Shootout: Carisma M48S, CEN Racing Puma Rally 1, HPI WR8 Flux
So next up, guys, we’re going to take this show out on the road, and that means we’re taking all three cars out for tarmac and dirt rallies. You will find three separate videos for each one of these rallies. The videos will showcase a tarmac run and a dirt run to keep it fair. All three cars will be featured, so look forward to those videos.
Final Tally
As we wrap up this series, we will have our final tally. I won’t discuss who gets the gold, silver, or bronze in the running videos. We will wait for the tally to be revealed in the final video. For the first video, the current totals are 12 points for the HPI WR8, 12 points for the Puma Rally 1, and 10 points for the M48S. It’s a really close competition, guys. Going into the challenge with tarmac and off-road, we’re going to see how these cars shape up. It’s amazing to see such a small gap separating all three cars by only two points, and it’s going to be a thrilling experience when we put them to the performance test.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the rally shootout between the Carisma M48S, CEN Racing Puma Rally 1, and HPI WR8 Flux showcases the varying qualities of each model. While the Carisma M48S and WR8 Flux excel in chassis and controller performance, the Puma Rally 1 is slightly hindered by its controller. Overall, all three models have their strengths and weaknesses, making it a challenging task to crown a clear winner.
In terms of parts availability, both the Carisma M48S and HPI WR8 Flux receive a silver rating. Despite the limited availability of spare parts for the Puma Rally One, there are still options for those who own this model. However, it is clear that the WR8 Flux has a slight advantage in this regard, as there are more chances of finding third-party components. Ultimately, the choice between these rally cars will depend on personal preferences and priorities.
