In this review, we will delve into the key aspects of the Axial SCX10 III CJ7, highlighting its design, performance, and overall value.
The Axial SCX10 III CJ7: A Detailed Review
The Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is an impressive one-tenth scale electric four-wheel-drive ready-to-run crawler. To get started with this kit, you’ll need a 2s or 3s LiPo battery and a compatible charger. The CJ7 is available in two colors, the silver variant being showcased today alongside the unique skill details that adorn this Jeep. One noteworthy feature of this crawler is the built-in Dig function, which we will explore in detail later.
Overview and Performance
Let’s start with an overview of the SCX10 III CJ7. The body is officially licensed and boasts dimensions of 18.9 inches in length and a wheelbase of 12.3 inches. With a width of 9.25 inches, this crawler provides a sturdy yet compact build, perfect for maneuvering through challenging terrains.
In the package, besides the CJ7 itself, you’ll find a few additional items. Axial has thoughtfully included scale bits, which enhance the overall realism of the RC. You’ll also receive the necessary four AAs for the controller, a T-wrench for quick and easy adjustments, and a light bar mount, showcasing the company’s attention to detail.
The Return of Scale Bits
It’s worth noting that the provision of scale bits in the packaging is a welcome move by Axial. In the past, they used to include these detailed accessories with their kits, and it’s great to see them revisiting this practice. While the range of scale bits may be limited, their inclusion adds a touch of customization potential to the CJ7.
The Dig Function
One of the standout features of the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is the Dig function. This built-in feature allows you to lock the rear axle while simultaneously engaging the front axle’s dig transmission, resulting in enhanced maneuverability on the trails. It’s a versatile feature that lets you tackle obstacles with precision and control, making your crawling experience even more enjoyable.
Trail Run Performance
To truly assess the capabilities of the SCX10 III CJ7, a trail run video is the best way to go. As showcased in the video accompanying this review, the CJ7 performs admirably on various terrains, including rocky surfaces, muddy trails, and steep inclines. The crawler’s suspension articulation and ample ground clearance allow it to navigate through challenging obstacles with ease. It’s safe to say that the CJ7 lives up to its reputation as a reliable and capable off-roader.
Owners Manual and Transmitter
They give you an axial sticker and then some axial decals, and this is the owners manual. Anybody thats familiar with axial their owners. Manuals are pretty extensive, give it a read when you get a chance, it comes in multiple different languages. Im not going to go through this on the video, but its a good thing to check out.
For the transmitter, this is the dx3. It is a three Channel controller. Your four aas are going to go down below power buttons on the rear. You have your throttle limit of 50, 75 and 100. You also have your reverse for your throttle, reverse for your steering. Then you have your steering, trim, throttle trim, you have a nice foam wheel, little thumb steer thats on here on the back side, your bind button and your third Channel. I would imagine this is going to be for your dig. Anybody thats familiar with the dx3s. They are fairly good controllers. If you have the Telemetry module, it would go in right here. You remove this cap, and this is where you would plug in the module for the Telemetry.
Wheels and Tires
I’m not sure if you guys noticed, but I’m not rocking the stock wheels and tires. These are some Amazon specials that I picked up. These are Mickey Thompson replicas with a somewhat of a method wheel replica on them.
The original wheels and tires that come with the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 are bead loock race Line Wheels and Mickey Thompson Baja boss tires mounted on them.
Performance and Handling
When it comes to performance and handling, the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 does not disappoint. This crawler is designed to tackle any terrain with ease. The suspension system is well-built, providing excellent articulation and stability on rough surfaces. The four-wheel drive system ensures maximum traction, allowing the crawler to conquer steep inclines and obstacles effortlessly.
The motor and ESC combination delivers smooth and precise control, allowing for precise maneuvering and crawling at low speeds. The throttle response is impressive, and the steering is highly responsive. The Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is capable of navigating tight corners and narrow trails effortlessly.
Design and Durability
The design of the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is highly detailed, capturing the essence of the iconic CJ7. The body is made of high-quality materials that are both lightweight and durable. The attention to detail is evident in the realistic features, such as the grille, headlights, and roll cage.
The durability of this crawler is impressive. It is built to withstand rough handling and endure challenging terrains. The metal frame and components add strength and rigidity to the overall structure, ensuring longevity and reliability. The Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is built to last and withstand the rigors of off-road crawling.
The Axial SCX10 III CJ7: A Comprehensive Review
Performance
One of the key factors that sets the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 apart from its predecessors is its enhanced performance. With upgraded wheels and tires, this vehicle is built for optimal traction and maneuverability. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned crawler, you’ll appreciate the exceptional handling and control this model offers. The ability to customize the wheels and tires further allows users to personalize their experience, making it truly their own.
Design
The design of the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is undeniably impressive. With meticulous attention to detail, Axial has created a vehicle that closely resembles its real-life counterpart. From the foldable side mirrors to the functioning wipers, every aspect has been carefully considered to create an immersive and realistic experience. The doors, too, are designed to open, adding another layer of authenticity to this RC crawler.
Unique Features
One standout feature of the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is the adjustable arms. While the overall dimensions of the vehicle are well-proportioned, some users may find it challenging to reach the steering wheel due to the arm length. However, this does not detract from the overall performance or enjoyment of the vehicle. Additionally, the breakaway side mirrors offer both practicality and durability, ensuring that they can withstand the challenges of off-road adventures.
Body and Exterior
The Axial SCX10 III CJ7 boasts a sturdy body armor design that gives it a rugged and aggressive look. The vehicle is equipped with LEDs both in the front and rear, providing excellent visibility and adding to its overall appeal. The LED lights are securely locked in place, ensuring durability even during intense off-road adventures. The car also features inner fenders in the front and rear, offering protection against debris and enhancing the vehicle’s realism.
Bumper and Suspension
One notable feature of this RC car is its well-designed front bumper, which not only adds an aesthetic touch but also provides additional protection. The bumper ensures that the car can withstand impact and collisions, minimizing potential damage. In terms of suspension, the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 impresses with its heavy-duty links. Unlike previous models that had thin links, this RC car comes with thicker and sturdier ones that resemble those found in kits. This improvement enhances the car’s overall performance and durability.
Axles and Drive Shaft
The Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is equipped with AR45 straight axles, a feature that sets it apart from the kit version, which comes with portals. The composite front and rear axles, combined with metal gears, ensure optimal performance and strength. Additionally, the vehicle boasts telescopic drive shafts, which are also composed of composite material. These drive shafts provide flexibility and durability, allowing the car to navigate various terrains with ease.
Chassis and Skid Plate
The frame of the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is built with a c-channel chassis, commonly known for its strength and durability in off-road vehicles. This design allows the car to handle rough terrains and obstacles without compromising its stability. The skid plate, made of composite material, further enhances the car’s durability by protecting the chassis during extreme off-road adventures.
Shocks and Springs
The Axial SCX10 III CJ7 features oil-filled, aluminum-bodied coil-over shocks. These shocks are not only visually appealing but also provide excellent suspension performance. The included screw-down adjusters allow users to fine-tune the spring stiffness, ensuring a comfortable ride on various terrains. The shocks offer remarkable rebound and absorbency, making the car feel springy and bouncy.
Electronics
For its electronics, the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 comes with a Spectrum 40 amp 2in1 ESC receiver. The ESC boasts an IC3 connector, which ensures reliable and efficient power delivery to the motor. This setup allows for seamless control and responsiveness, enhancing the overall performance of the RC car. The included card provides instructions on the setup and operation of the electronics, making it user-friendly, especially for beginners.
Overall, the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 presents numerous upgrades and improvements compared to its predecessors. From its sturdy body armor and LED lights to its durable axles and telescopic drive shafts, this RC car is built to handle challenging terrains and deliver an exciting off-road experience. With its reliable electronics and adjustable shocks, it offers a versatile and thrilling driving experience for enthusiasts of all skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned RC enthusiast or a beginner looking for a high-quality crawler, the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is definitely worth considering.
Motor and Servo
The motor used in the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is quite unique. It is a dynamite 35 turn 540 brush motor. What’s interesting is that they haven’t rebranded it yet. Moving on to the servo, we have the S614 servo, which I believe has a 23-tooth configuration. It would have been nice to see Axial follow the trend of other RCs under Horizon Hobby and use a 25-tooth spline servo. However, the S614 servo is still a reliable choice.
Faux Engine Cover
One delightful feature of the SCX10 III CJ7 is the inclusion of a faux engine cover. We first saw this feature with the SCX10 III and it’s great to see it here as well. Once you put the body on, the engine cover won’t be visible, but it’s one of those little details that brings a smile to your face. It serves as a reminder that there’s something special underneath.
Battery Mounting Options
You’ll be pleased to know that the SCX10 III CJ7 offers two locations for mounting your battery. At the rear, there’s a fixed position with a Velcro strap. Alternatively, you can choose to mount the battery off to the side, again using a Velcro strap. This versatility gives you the flexibility to customize the weight distribution of your crawler according to your preference.
Two-Speed Transmission
The kit version of the SCX10 III CJ7 comes with a two-speed transmission, which can be operated using a servo. However, in this particular model, the two-speed transmission is locked out. If you wish to utilize the two-speed feature, you have the option of installing another servo to unlock it. Personally, I find the two-speed transmission in the SCX10 III CJ7 to be quite useless. It’s much more effective to upgrade the motor and ESC to achieve higher speeds.
Dig Feature
The Axial SCX10 III CJ7 comes equipped with a two-speed transmission, and the inclusion of this feature is very impressive. At first glance, it may not be immediately recognizable, but it is indeed present. The Dig, which controls the two-speed transmission, is conveniently located and easy to access. This feature enhances the overall performance of the vehicle, adding a new dimension to its capabilities.
Ride Height
As a trail enthusiast, my preferences and requirements differ slightly. In terms of ride height, I don’t have any major complaints. However, I am curious to see how it fares on the actual trail. Initial impressions are positive, and I am eager to put it to the test and see how it performs.
CJ Edition
One of the highlights of this model is the fact that it is a CJ Edition, which I appreciate. As a fan of the CJ series, it’s great to see Axial offering this specific edition. However, I would have preferred the doors to be magnet mounted rather than using body pins. Despite this, I have no issues with how the body locks into place. I am accustomed to this setup, as I have previously owned the kit version and an SCS 6, both of which lock in the same way.
Tires and Beadlocks
The choice of tires on the SCX10 III CJ7 is commendable, especially for an RTR model. The tire compound provides a good grip, and I find it suitable for various terrains. Additionally, I appreciate the inclusion of beadlocks, as they offer flexibility for those who may want to swap out the tires or wheels for customization purposes. This attention to detail adds to the scale realism of the truck, which I particularly enjoy.
Proven Platform
The SCX10 III platform has already proven its worth, and I have no qualms with it. Axial has done an excellent job in terms of scale realism with this model. Every component, from the fit to the finish, is meticulously crafted, resulting in a high-quality product. This attention to detail sets it apart from other options available in the market.
Performance on the Trail
After thoroughly examining the SCX10 III CJ7, I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed. Now, it’s time to put it to the test on the trail. The Dig feature, which can be tried out right here, is just one aspect of its performance capabilities. I am excited to see how this truck handles various terrains and obstacles, and I have high expectations based on its features and design.
In conclusion, the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is a standout in terms of its features, scale realism, and overall performance. From the Dig feature to the choice of tires and the attention to detail, this model has left a lasting impression on me. I am eager to see how it performs on the trail and am confident that it will exceed my expectations.
The Impressive Axial SCX10 III CJ7 Edition
When it comes to the world of remote control trail crawlers, the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 Edition stands out as a remarkable option. This scale body RC crawler has managed to captivate enthusiasts with its incredible performance and attention to detail.
Trail Performance at its Best
One of the first things that caught my attention when testing out this crawler was its stability on the trail. Despite its small size, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it handled some challenging obstacles. The shocks are perfectly set up for trail running, providing smooth and controlled movement. Even on uneven terrains, the SCX10 III CJ7 Edition remained steady and didn’t tip over, which is quite impressive.
The Versatile Dig Function
Another feature that stood out to me was the Dig function. I had previous experience with it on the kit version, but to see it included right out of the box in an RTR (Ready-to-Run) model was a pleasant surprise. The Dig function allows you to easily engage the rear axle to improve maneuverability in tight spaces. It adds an extra level of control to your crawling experience, and I must say, it works flawlessly.
Speed and Power
Although some remote control enthusiasts crave high-speed thrills, I found the RC’s speed to be more than sufficient for trail crawling. It doesn’t have the blistering speed of a brushless motor, but for the purpose of this crawler, it is perfect. However, if you do desire more speed, upgrading to a brushless motor or a lower turn brush motor would be the way to go.
Reliable Servo Performance
I encountered no issues with the servo during my testing. It performed flawlessly and provided precise control. The only minor gripe I have is with the server spline, which is at 24 instead of the more commonly used 25. This restricts the flexibility of swapping in different servos without having to replace the servo horn. Nevertheless, this is a small inconvenience in an otherwise outstanding package from Axial.
A Worthy Addition to the SCX10 III Lineup
All in all, the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 Edition is a worthy addition to the SCX10 III lineup. With its impressive trail performance, versatile Dig function, and reliable servo, it offers a top-tier experience for remote control enthusiasts. The LED lighting system adds a touch of realism, making this RC vehicle stand out even in low-light conditions.

Equipped with a powerful motor and advanced transmission system, this crawler offers excellent torque and crawling capabilities. The multi-link suspension provides optimal articulation, allowing for smooth traversal over various terrains. The three-speed transmission adds versatility to the driving experience, enabling users to adjust the gear ratio to suit different scenarios. With its high torque servo and durable driveline components, this RC vehicle delivers reliable performance, even under challenging conditions.
Features
The Axial SCX10 III CJ7 boasts a range of impressive features that enhance its overall value. The inclusion of a realistic metal frame chassis adds durability, ensuring that this crawler can withstand rough terrain and heavy usage. The waterproof electronics provide peace of mind, enabling users to tackle wet conditions without worrying about damaging their investment.
Value
With its combination of exceptional design, performance, and features, the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 offers great value for RC enthusiasts. While the price tag may seem steep for some, the attention to detail and high-quality construction justify the investment. Whether you are a seasoned crawler or a collector, this replica CJ7 is a worthwhile addition to your RC collection, guaranteeing endless hours of fun and exploration.
In conclusion, the Axial SCX10 III CJ7 is a remarkable RC vehicle that excels in design, performance, and features.
