A Few of My Favorite Small RC Cars

Introduction

RC cars are a popular hobby for many enthusiasts. The thrill of controlling a miniature vehicle and maneuvering it through various terrains is unmatched. In this article, we will explore a few of my favorite small RC cars that have brought me countless hours of fun and excitement.
When it comes to small RC cars, there are a few favorites that I always reach for. Each one has its own unique features and capabilities that make them a joy to drive and play with. In this article, I will share some of my top picks for small RC cars and discuss why they have become my favorites.

1. Customized Defender TRX-4M

The first small RC car on my list is my customized Defender TRX-4M. I worked with Defender Customs to create a unique body for this truck. The body is custom-made and can be ordered if you’re interested. What I love about this car is that it is completely different from anything else out there. The chances of seeing another one of these on the trail are highly unlikely. It was a lot of fun building this car, and I actually had another one in white before this. I shouldn’t have sold it, but I might just build another one soon. Let me show you what’s under the body – it’s still a TRX-4M with some modifications.

2. Miniature Buggy

Next up is a miniature buggy that I built from scratch. This little car is a complete DIY project, and it was a challenge, but I’m very proud of the end result. The miniature size of this buggy allows it to maneuver through tight spaces and navigate obstacles with ease. It’s the perfect choice for indoor races or driving around the backyard. The customization options for this car are endless, and it’s a great vehicle to showcase your creativity.

3. Drift King

The Drift King is one of my favorite small RC cars for its incredible drifting abilities. This car is specifically designed for drifting, and it delivers outstanding performance. With its low center of gravity and specialized tires, it can slide effortlessly around corners, emulating the exhilarating experience of real drifting. If you’re a fan of precision driving and love the feeling of controlling a car in a controlled slide, the Drift King is the perfect choice.

4. Monster Truck Madness

No RC car collection is complete without a powerful monster truck. My favorite small monster truck is packed with power and can tackle any terrain with ease. Whether it’s jumping over ramps, crushing obstacles, or simply driving through rough terrain, this monster truck delivers an adrenaline-pumping experience every time. The oversized tires and robust suspension system ensure a smooth ride and provide excellent control even on the most uneven surfaces.

5. Speed Demon

Last but not least, I have to mention the Speed Demon. This small RC car is all about speed and quick maneuvers. It’s built for high-speed racing and can reach incredible speeds in no time. With its sleek design and aerodynamic body, it cuts through the air effortlessly, providing a thrilling racing experience. Whether you’re competing with friends or aiming for the fastest lap time, the Speed Demon is a fantastic choice for those who crave speed and excitement.

Inner Fenders and Motor

In the world of small RC cars, customization is key. One of my favorite builds features inner fenders that give the Defender body a more polished look. Although I can’t recall the exact manufacturer, these inner fenders truly add a touch of sophistication to the overall design.

As for the motor, I opted for the P90 from Keenan Hobbies. This particular motor, known for its reliability and performance, is perfect for those who prefer stock electronics. It provides a smooth and responsive driving experience that truly enhances the enjoyment of maneuvering these little cars.

The Running Gear

To further optimize the performance and handling of my RC car, I added a Reef micro 99 up front. This upgrade, paired with the DSM mount, offers improved stability and control during high-speed turns. For those who prefer alternative options, Reef also offers their own mount to ensure compatibility with their products.

Moving on to the running gear, I decided to keep most of it in stock trim. However, one notable modification I made was incorporating tril portals. These portals, developed in collaboration with Trio, required a significant amount of time and effort to perfect. I must say, the end result was worth it. The combination of the brass portal cover boxes and Trio brass wheels not only adds a unique aesthetic appeal but also enhances the overall durability of the car.

Topside Modifications

While the bottom side remains relatively unchanged, the topside of my RC car tells a different story. I decided to equip it with Trio link sets and Tri shocks. The red shocks, in particular, caught my attention. They provide a level of performance that is on par, if not superior, to the stock shocks. The oil-filled shocks add realism to the scaled-down experience, allowing for smoother and more controlled movements.

A Ride Well Worth It

I can confidently say that I have put this RC car through its paces. If you were to browse through some of my previous videos, you would witness the moments when this car conquered the Harford rocks with ease. The combination of these carefully selected modifications and upgrades has truly transformed this small RC car into a force to be reckoned with.

In conclusion, the world of small RC cars offers endless possibilities for customization and modification. With the right combination of parts and upgrades, these miniature vehicles can reach levels of performance that rival their larger counterparts. Whether you are a seasoned hobbyist or just starting out in the world of RC cars, it is worth exploring the various options available to enhance your driving experience. Give yourself the opportunity to unleash the full potential of these small wonders and experience the thrill of creating your own dream RC car.

Axial SCX10 III

One of my top picks is the Axial SCX10 III. This RC car is built to withstand rocky terrains with its portal axles. The beauty of this design is that the axles stay off the rocks, keeping them in excellent condition. I have enjoyed building and customizing this car, and it has become one of my all-time favorites. Whenever I have the opportunity, I take it out for a spin, and it never fails to catch people’s attention.

Axial SCX24

Another favorite of mine is the Axial SCX24, specifically the Gladiator model. This RC car may not have undergone extensive modifications, but it doesn’t need to. The stock electronics in this car work perfectly fine, so I haven’t felt the need to make any changes. I applied some decals to the body, although not as neatly as I would have liked. The hard Park chassis, with its trail sliders and front and rear bumper mounts, gives this car a sturdy base. I find the Micro 99 motor and trail shocks to be the perfect combination for this tiny beast. To complete the look, I opted for the Goodyear Wrangler tires, which add a touch of ruggedness to the overall appearance.

Simplicity and Satisfaction

The beauty of the Axial SCX24 is that it requires minimal modifications to perform exceptionally well. The stock axles have proven to be reliable, and with a little bit of color play using the tri-link set, the car looks even better. The chassis design effortlessly complements the performance and functionality of the car, leaving me with no complaints whatsoever. Due to its reliability and excellent performance straight out of the box, I have chosen to keep this RC car in its original state.

A Blast from the Past: JX2 F Link

The JX2 F Link holds a special place in my heart as it takes me back to my younger days when I used to race these small RC cars. It’s a true nostalgia piece for me, and I absolutely love it. However, there is one significant drawback that bothers me – the use of four body clips. I fail to understand the rationale behind it, and it tends to be quite annoying. In most cases, I find myself leaving the body clips off altogether.

Despite this minor flaw, the JX2 F Link remains in its stock form. I have only made one modification, which is changing the battery connector. Other than that, it runs perfectly fine. I predominantly use it on carpeted surfaces, such as my living room or the basement. Occasionally, I also take it for a spin in the garage, where the polished concrete floor adds to the thrill. This truck proves to be an incredibly fun ride, especially considering my fondness for nostalgia. It may have its quirks, but it works flawlessly for me, reviving the exhilaration of my past experiences in racing.

The Battle-Ready Granite Grom

Stepping into the present, the Granite Grom takes the spotlight. While it comes with its own set of body mounting issues (which I’m not particularly thrilled about), it serves its purpose effectively. The body mount may not be my favorite feature, but it gets the job done.

Just like the JX2 F Link, I prefer to keep the Granite Grom in its stock condition. I have not found the need for any modifications so far. This little beast maneuvers like a champion, conquering various terrains effortlessly. Whether it’s darting across the living room or taking sharp turns in the backyard, the Granite Grom never disappoints.

All-Time Favorites

Both the JX2 F Link and the Granite Grom quickly won their places among my favorite small RC cars. The JX2 F Link holds a special sentimental value, reminding me of my racing days. Its flawless performance and the joy it brings make it a treasured possession. On the other hand, the Granite Grom embodies the excitement of the present, delivering thrill and entertainment in every ride.

While both cars have their minor flaws, they have never failed to amaze me with their abilities. They have provided countless hours of fun and continue to be reliable companions in my RC adventures. Whether you’re seeking a trip down memory lane or a taste of contemporary RC excitement, these small cars are sure to satisfy. Give them a try and experience the joy of remote-controlled racing firsthand!

The Upgraded SR 315 Receiver

One of my favorite small RC cars is the one that I decided to upgrade with the SR 315 receiver. I also equipped it with a Castle Nano for enhanced performance. I even created a video showcasing the transformation of this car, which you can find if you visit my channel. This upgrade truly brought this truck to life, giving it a newfound power and excitement. Additionally, I have added a reefs micro 99 with a shorty horn, further enhancing its capabilities. It’s truly amazing to see how these modifications improve the overall performance of the car.

A Blast to Drive

The small RC car that I am currently having a blast with is the JX 2. This car is just as fun as the previous one I mentioned, and it never fails to impress. I have kept the stock connectors on this car as they perfectly fit the battery and function flawlessly. I have also retained the rocks in the chassis, as they provide an added level of authenticity and make for a more exciting driving experience. This car has quickly become one of my favorites that I can always count on for a great time.

The Versatile UTB 18

Moving on to a slightly larger option, the UTB 18 is an incredible RC car that offers exceptional performance and versatility. This car is not as small as the previous ones I have mentioned, but it does not disappoint in any way. The UTB 18 is actually a bugger kit from Sparetime Hobbies, and I have customized it with boom racing narrow tires to give it a unique and sleek look. Additionally, I have added 1.9 RC four-wheel-drive steelies and scale brake rotters for enhanced realism. This car also features tgh bumpers and a winch mount, making it class one legal.

Introducing the Spare Time Hobbies Small RC Car

The Spare Time Hobbies small RC car is one of my favorite models in my collection. With its unique design and impressive features, it stands out from the rest. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this car so special.

Exquisite Interior Design

The interior pan of this small RC car is meticulously crafted, showcasing the attention to detail that went into its creation. Although it may be hard to see due to the blacked-out windows, the interior pan is there, giving the car an authentic look and feel. This small RC car truly embodies the concept of a hard body, making it a standout in the world of RC cars.

Powerful Upgrades

In my pursuit of enhancing the performance of this small RC car, I recently decided to upgrade the power plant to the Holmes 380 brushed motor. This motor offers incredible speed and precision, giving the car an extra boost on the tracks. Along with the motor, I also added the Nano and a nano becc for optimal performance. These upgrades truly take this small RC car to the next level and provide an exhilarating racing experience.

Astonishing Customization

One of the things I love most about this small RC car is the ability to customize it according to my preferences. I acquired the spare time hobby chassis from RC Attic, which provides a solid foundation for the car. The chassis rails and prints, all sourced from Spare Time Hobbies, are top-notch and add a touch of realism to the overall design. I also made adjustments to the hubs by trimming down the outside edges to ensure they fit seamlessly with the scale lug bolts. This customization truly enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the car.

Impressive Performance Enhancements

To ensure an outstanding performance on the tracks, I equipped this small RC car with Trio axles, which provide excellent durability and stability. The front has a brass third member, while the rear boasts an aluminum one, providing the perfect balance for superior handling. Additionally, Trail links and Trail Drive Shafts complete the package, ensuring smooth and precise maneuverability. These performance enhancements make this small RC car a force to be reckoned with on any racing track.

Koshow Mini Z Jimny

The Koshow Mini Z Jimny is one of my favorite small RC cars. I was lucky enough to win this car in an online contest, and I have to say, it’s been a blast to drive. The adjustable tie rod in the front running the reefs 422 HD and micro 99 Servo winch make it a top-notch option. Additionally, the CMS (Chassis-mounted Servo) setup adds to its appeal. The fact that it is class one legal again is a major plus.

Upgrading the UTB 18

Another favorite of mine is the UTB 18. This 18-scale RC car offers a great driving experience. While it may need some upgrades, such as better shocks, it still performs well. I have been looking at the Deluxe shocks as a possible upgrade, as the factory shocks tend to stick in position. Despite this minor issue, the UTB 18 remains a fantastic choice for RC car enthusiasts.

More Small RC Cars to Explore

Aside from the Koshow Mini Z Jimny and UTB 18, there are more small RC cars that I would like to mention. I won’t be ranking them in order of preference, as I enjoy each one for its unique features and driving experience.

A Fantastic Little Chassis: Late Model RC Car

The late model RC car is a fantastic little chassis that never fails to impress. With its brushless motor and sleek design, this car is a must-have for any RC enthusiast. Growing up around late model tracks, I have always had a fondness for this type of car. My uncle, W Charlie Wman, was a late model racer, and this car bears his number and color scheme.

When I look at this RC car, it brings back memories of the pits and the excitement of watching races. In the 80s Pennsylvania dirt track late model scene, names like Les Hair and Jerry Wman were well-known. If you were a part of that scene, you would instantly recognize these names. But even if you’re not familiar with them, this car still resonates with its unique appeal and connection to my past.

I particularly enjoy running this late model RC car in my garage on a polished concrete surface. The speed and control it offers make it a blast to drive. It effortlessly glides across the floor, giving me a taste of the exhilaration of racing.

A Golden Gem: Moose Ripper RC Truck

The Moose Ripper is another one of my favorite small RC cars. It was mostly built by my friend, Matt Cooker, who did a fantastic job with it. The last RC car on my list is a limited edition model that holds a special place in my collection. Moose created a limited run of these chassis for the TRX 4M, and I was lucky enough to snag one. Still in its box, this RC car is a masterpiece.

The chassis itself is machined out of billet, making it both durable and visually stunning. Its design and craftsmanship are truly outstanding. Every detail has been carefully considered, resulting in a car that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Although this RC car has yet to hit the road, I can’t wait to experience its power and performance firsthand. I know that once I take it out of the box and unleash it on the track, it will undoubtedly live up to its reputation.

The TX 4M is a remarkable remote-controlled (RC) car that stands out from the rest. It holds the prestigious title of being number 60 in its series. Although there is also an option to purchase the scx24, I believe that the 4M is the one to have. It boasts an exceptional quality that is difficult to find in other models. Surprisingly, only a limited number of a hundred units were manufactured, making it an extremely sought-after item. I am fortunate enough to own one of these exclusive pieces and must admit that I am completely enamored by it.

A Future Rival to the Vanquish and Ripper

The TX 4M holds immense potential, and I dream of one day building it up to match the prowess of my Vanquish and Ripper RC cars. These two cars have provided me endless joy and excitement, but I believe the TX 4M has the capability to surpass them both. With its unique features and limited availability, it has sparked a sense of determination within me to transform it into an unparalleled beast on the racing track.

A Glimpse into the Possibilities

The versatility of the TX 4M is awe-inspiring. Its small size allows it to maneuver effortlessly through even the tightest corners, making it an excellent choice for indoor races. The precision control it offers makes each turn and acceleration feel like a work of art. The sheer power that can be harnessed from its petite frame is what truly sets it apart from other RC cars in its class. It is truly a force to be reckoned with.
