When the Squash Van was first released, I have to admit, I was a bit undecided. But then, I came across a video by Phil from Poor Boy RC, where he unboxed and built the van. To my surprise, the chassis looked completely different from what I had imagined. It piqued my interest, and I knew I had to check it out.

I made my way to the local hobby shop to get a closer look at the Squash Van. As luck would have it, they had five in stock. I was even luckier because this was the last one left on the shelf. With a great price tag, I couldn’t resist bringing it home with me.

I also opted for a basic hobby wing-style ESC and a Fly Sky receiver to complement the upgraded motor. To ensure smooth and fast maneuvering, I installed a JX servo, which surpassed my expectations in terms of speed.
Four-Wheel Steering Option
While assembling the kit, I noticed that it came with a four-wheel steering upgrade. This feature intrigued me, as it promised enhanced control and turning capabilities. The kit included different dog bones for the front and rear wheels, as well as additional knuckles. Although I didn’t use these components, I can’t help but wonder how the four-wheel steering option would have improved the Squash Van’s already impressive turning circle. If you’re seeking an extra edge in handling, the four-wheel steer option might be worth exploring.
60mm Oil Shocks
To further elevate the performance of my Tamiya Squash Van, I decided to upgrade the suspension system. I had a set of 60mm oil shocks lying around, specifically designed for racing. These shocks fit perfectly on the car, albeit with a slight modification. The standard lower arm was slightly short, so I replaced it with an extended lower loop arm. This adjustment allowed me to maintain the same ride height as the stock shock. For optimal results, I recommend using shocks that measure between 60 and 65mm in height. The difference in performance between the standard friction shocks and the oil shocks is remarkable, as you can see in the accompanying video.
By applying these upgrades and modifications, I have transformed my Tamiya Squash Van into a powerhouse on the GF-02 chassis. With this battery setup, the Squash Van showcased its speed and torque, delivering an exhilarating experience. The vehicle felt remarkably stable, allowing me to maneuver confidently. While the steering was quite responsive, I found that dialing it back slightly would have been ideal for my taste.
