Traxxas recently introduced a new motor for Mudboss racing, and starting from October 1st, it is allowed to be used in the Mudboss class according to Salvis rules. However, there was a slight problem as the motor wasn’t even available yet. Despite this obstacle, Salvis managed to find a solution and acquired the motor. Currently, the motor is available in the four-wheel drive Slash, the four-wheel drive Stampede, and the four-wheel drive Rustler models.

Alongside me today is Dave Peak, one of the highly respected racers in the Mud Boss class. We will be testing this new Traxxas BL-2s Brushless motor. Our main focus during the testing will be on the reliability and heat of the motor, rather than the top speed. We want to see if it can perform as smoothly as a 12T motor, but we are not aiming for the fastest lap time.

Upon receiving the new Traxxas BL-2s Brushless motor for Mudboss racing, we couldn’t wait to put it to the test. With a heat gun in hand, we were ready to see what this motor is capable of.
After a few initial laps on the track, we decided to check the temperature. According to Full Throttle’s set gearing rule of 1990, the motor was still running at a surprisingly cool 93.9 degrees after coming off the track. This was indeed an impressive temperature for a motor of this caliber.
Considering that if the motor was a 12-turn, it would have reached around 120 degrees, the BL-2s Brushless motor was performing exceptionally well. After running about 30 laps, the motor was still running cool. This raised our curiosity even more, and we decided to push it further to test its limits.

Building Up Heat

To further gauge the performance of the Traxxas BL-2s Brushless motor, we decided to adjust the gear ratio. Normally, the kit comes with a 23-tooth gear, which is what we initially used. However, we wanted to see if we could generate more heat by increasing the gear ratio.
We swapped out the gear for a 23/90 setup and took the car for another spin on the track. The difference was noticeable, with the car pulling a little harder down the straightaways. The 23-tooth gear is now more popular among racers, replacing the previous 22/90 setup.

The first thing we immediately notice is the difference in lap times. With the previous motor, the last lap resulted in six wo last lap of 5986. However, with the Traxxas BL-2s Brushless Motor, it seems that there is definitely a big difference in lap times. Is this change in pace a positive sign of things to come?

Another crucial aspect to consider is the heat generated by the motor. After running the car with a 2390 gear, we anxiously check the temperature. To our surprise, it reads 104 degrees. This is quite impressive, considering the additional gear we added. The car feels great on the track, and there seems to be plenty of potential in this motor. Perhaps we can even push it a bit further with a 24-25 gear ratio.

To have a fair evaluation, we decide to switch back to the brushed motor and test its performance. Equipped with the 12T motor and a 1990 gear, we hit the track once again. The lap times reveal a significant difference in speed. With the brushed motor, the fastest lap recorded is 5.94 seconds, much quicker than anything we have seen throughout the day. It’s clear that the brushed motor has its strengths, but how will it fare against the brushless motor in the long run?
