The Disappointment of the Brushless Models
Wl toys, a well-known brand in the RC world, had been gaining a loyal customer base with their affordable and reliable RC buggies. However, everything changed with the release of their brushless models. It was a huge disappointment for many enthusiasts, and one of the most common problems was the issue of Coggin.
The Coggin issue made the early cars slightly undrivable, and it drove a lot of customers away. The frustration was palpable, and it seemed like Wl toys had taken a step backward instead of moving forward. But they didn’t give up.
Updates and Redemption
Wl toys recognized the problems with their brushless models and made some much-needed updates. They managed to get rid of quite a few of the issues, which helped to salvage their reputation. Since then, they have released some pretty good cars that have impressed the RC community.
The 144010, a brushless ready-to-run version of the popular 144001, was one such impressive buggy. It quickly became an RC legend and helped bring back some of the customers Wl toys had lost during the brushless version one debacle. The release of the 124008 also contributed to the company’s revival, offering a very impressive buggy for the money.
The Potential Failure: WL Toys 124010
Now, Wl toys is introducing a new buggy, the 124010. And let me tell you, it came dangerously close to being another major fail for the company. At first glance, it looks like a great buggy, unsuspecting and promising. But the issue lies in what was revealed through the company’s social media accounts.
The Issue with the Photos
When Wl toys released photos of their new buggy, we all noticed something concerning. It was going to come with friction shocks. For those who have been following the RC scene, this was a red flag. Friction shocks have been a source of disappointment for many in the past years.
We had hoped that Wl toys had learned from their mistakes and would provide better shocks for their new model. But alas, it seems like they missed the memo. This revelation left us perplexed, wondering why they would compromise on such a crucial component.
A Final Verdict
While the WL Toys 124010 might look promising, the presence of friction shocks raises concerns about its overall performance. Will it live up to the expectations of RC enthusiasts, or will it fall short like its brushless predecessors?
Only time will tell if Wl toys has truly learned from their past mistakes and if the 124010 will be a success or another disappointment. As RC enthusiasts, we can’t help but hold onto a glimmer of hope that Wl toys will surprise us and deliver a buggy that exceeds our expectations.
The Issue with Friction Shocks
I still don’t understand why many cheap RC cars come with friction shocks. In this day and age, it’s surprising that companies still choose to include them instead of the more efficient and affordable oil-filled shocks. Are they trying to cut corners and save costs? WL Toys seems to be guilty of this.
Customer Feedback
Frustrated with this choice, many of us took to social media to voice our concerns. We made it clear that we wanted the new WL Toys 1/12 RC Buggy to come with proper adjustable oil-filled shocks. As a reviewer myself, I wouldn’t have even considered testing it if it came with friction shocks.
A Positive Change
Fortunately, WL Toys listened to our feedback. The good news is that the buggy now comes with the proper adjustable oil-filled shocks. These shocks have become the standard for WL Toys’ buggies, and they have proven to perform well in the past.
What’s in the Box?
Before we delve into the specifics of the buggy, let’s take a look at what comes in the box. WL Toys has been including a particular set of accessories with all their new models. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of these additions. I actually preferred the older black accessories as they were a bit smaller and more comfortable to hold.
Functional Features
In terms of functionality, the WL Toys 1/12 RC Buggy includes throttle and steering trim adjustment. The wheel comes with a foam grip, and for those who like to steer using their thumb, WL Toys has got you covered.
A Closer Look
Now that we have covered the initial details, let’s take a closer look at the buggy itself.
The Battery and Phone Holder
The new $99 WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy comes with a battery that requires four Triple A batteries to get you up and running. While this may be convenient for some, there are others, like me, who find this to be quite a hassle. I’m sure many would agree that it would be better if the buggy came with a normal battery.
Additionally, the inclusion of a phone holder seems rather pointless. Personally, I never use it and I doubt that many others do either. It’s an unnecessary feature that could have been left out, in my opinion.
Beginner-Friendly Design
The intention behind this beginner buggy is to make it accessible for those new to the hobby. And I get it, they wanted it to be easy to use right out of the box. However, I must admit that I’m not a huge fan of this approach. While it may be beginner-friendly, it may not appeal to more experienced users who prefer more customization options.
Customization Potential
On the bright side, if you want to use normal batteries with this buggy, it is possible. All you need to do is undo the two screws, release the connector, and then you can use any 2s pack with a Deans Connector. This gives users the option to modify the buggy to their liking, which is appreciated.
Accessories and Manual
In terms of accessories, the package includes a typical cheap RC car USB charger, a cross wrench, and a screwdriver. There are also Shock preload spacers, but it seems like the manufacturer may have forgotten to remove them from the box, as the new upgraded shocks are already fully adjustable.
Lastly, the package comes with a basic black and white manual, which provides essential information for operating the buggy. While it may not be the most comprehensive manual, it serves its purpose.
The Styling
Taking a moment to appreciate the aesthetics of the buggy, I must say that I really like the color scheme. The body design reminds me of the relallo amx12, which adds a touch of style to the overall appearance.
In conclusion, while the new $99 WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy has its drawbacks, such as the inconvenience of the battery and the unnecessary phone holder, it does offer some customization potential and features a visually appealing design. Whether it will be a total fail or not will ultimately depend on the preferences and needs of individual users.
Underneath the Body
Taking a closer look underneath the body of the new $99 WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy reveals a plastic chassis with a honeycomb design. This design is reminiscent of some of the MJX vehicles and can also be seen on a well-known brand. The inclusion of plastic side guards is a cool feature as they allow the body to fit securely in place. The front and rear shock towers are also made of plastic, but the bumper is metal. The adjustable oil-filled shocks are a nice addition, although there are limited adjustment options in this buggy. Most of the links are fixed, apart from the ability to adjust the toe. Notably, there is a metal center drive shaft and thick metal CBDs on the front dog bones and rear. However, the rear wing feels weak and may not withstand much abuse.
Battery Setup and Components
While the battery setup on the buggy might not be everyone’s favorite, it does offer ample space for custom packs. This flexibility allows users to fit their own battery packs as desired. As expected, the buggy is equipped with ball bearings throughout. The metal differentials are worth mentioning, although it is advisable to check the amount of grease present in them.
Wheels and Tires
The wheels and tires of the new WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy provide a pleasing experience. They have a nice, sticky feel, similar to a medium compound. This feature ensures excellent grip on both on-road and off-road surfaces, which is a crucial aspect for any RC vehicle.
In conclusion, the new WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy offers a mix of impressive features and some areas of concern. The plastic chassis with a honeycomb design and the adjustable oil-filled shocks are notable positives. However, the weak rear wing and limited adjustability may disappoint some users. Nevertheless, the inclusion of ball bearings, metal differentials, and high-quality wheels and tires add value to this RC buggy. Overall, it presents a decent option in the $99 price range, despite its minor flaws.
The Lack of Grease in WL Toys Diffs
One of the biggest issues I have encountered with WL Toys is the lack of grease in their differentials. It is disappointing to see a company repeat the same mistakes without learning from them. This particular model, the $99 WL Toys 1/12 RC Buggy, is no exception.
A Step Back with Brush Setup
What really frustrates me is the fact that WL Toys has gone back to using a brush setup for this buggy. They have paired a heavy 560 brushed motor with a two-in-one 60-amp SC and a five-wire servo. While I understand that this model targets beginners, going back to a brush setup seems unnecessary.
Speed Test with Included Battery
Now, let’s see how fast this new WL Toys buggy can go on the included 1300 milliamp-hour battery. Here we go, counting down: one, two, four, zero, one, zero. Will we hit 30 miles per hour? That’s my hope.
Performance on the Road
Once we hit the road, the buggy feels really planted. The tires provide excellent grip, and it handles surprisingly well. The power provided by the included battery is satisfactory, but having driven the brushless version, I can’t help but crave for more.
Claims vs. Reality
WL Toys claims that this buggy can reach a top speed of 34 miles per hour, which is approximately 55 kilometers per hour. However, based on my testing, I don’t believe we will be able to achieve that today. Let’s bring it back and evaluate its actual performance.
The Need for Speed
When it comes to RC buggies, speed is always a crucial factor. The WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy claims a top speed of 55 kilometers per hour, which translates to about 34 miles per hour. However, upon testing, it fell short of this mark, reaching only 31 miles per hour. While this may disappoint some speed enthusiasts, it is important to note that 31 miles per hour is still sufficiently fast for a beginner.
Off-Road Performance
One of the key aspects of any RC buggy is its ability to handle off-road terrain with ease. Surprisingly, the WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy performs admirably well in this aspect. Its excellent handling and grip allow it to tackle various off-road challenges effectively. The inclusion of proper shocks, as opposed to the subpar friction shocks, further adds to its off-road performance. Overall, this buggy exceeded expectations in terms of off-road capabilities.
Competition in the Market
While the WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy showcases notable features and performance, it is essential to consider other options available in the market. One prominent contender is the MJX Hyper Go. If the hyper go does not appeal to you and you prefer the styling of the WLTOYS buggy, another option to consider is the One Two Four Zero Zero Eight. The latter offers a brushless system, which provides additional power. However, it is important to note that the WLTOYS RC Buggy is reasonably priced at around £83 or $99, considering its features and capabilities.
Aesthetics vs. Performance
While the WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy may not match the performance of its brushless counterpart, it certainly stands out in terms of aesthetics. The styling of this buggy is truly impressive and deserves recognition. It exudes a certain charm and uniqueness that sets it apart from its competitors. However, when it comes to raw performance, the brushless version takes the lead. It provides a faster experience straight out of the box.
In conclusion, the WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy proves to be a commendable option for beginners or those who prioritize aesthetics. Its slightly lower speed rating and competition from other models with brushless systems may be deterrents for some. Nonetheless, considering its price, off-road performance, and appealing design, the WLTOYS 1/12 RC Buggy is far from being a total fail.
The Brand New WL Toys
So there we go then guys, that was the brand new WL toys. One two: four: zero one: zero – another great option from the guys at WL toys, but it is by no means perfect straight out of the box.
A Surprising Performance
The buggy itself performs really well, a lot better than I expected, and I don’t have an issue with that. It’s fast, agile, and handles rough terrains with ease. It definitely has the potential to provide hours of fun for RC enthusiasts.
The Terrible Battery
But what I don’t like about this buggy is the fact that they use that terrible battery. It falls short in terms of capacity and runtime. I would have preferred to have seen a normal 2s pack that could offer a longer playtime. It’s disappointing when a great RC vehicle is limited by a lackluster battery.
An Unimpressive Transmitter
Additionally, the transmitter they provide is not up to par. It’s not the user-friendly, ergonomic design that I was hoping for. I’m not a huge fan of these types of transmitters and I wish they had gone for the older style which was more reliable and intuitive.
An Ignored Customer Base
WL Toys seems to have a problem with listening to their customers and the people who review their products. It appears that they consistently overlook valuable feedback and fail to make meaningful changes based on it. This lack of attention to customer satisfaction has been going on for years, and it’s disheartening to think that they might not take any notice in the near future.
Weighing the Options
So let me know in the comments section what you think of this new buggy by WL Toys. Do you think it’s worth the money, or do you think you’re better off going for the brushless one, two, four: zero zero! Eight!
