Introduction
Now that says a lot about this truck, it’s a sickening Team Associated, it’s a mini, and it’s also an MGT. But it’s only, you heard me say it, a 3.0. Now, what the hell does 3.0 mean, because I think you guys all know that the MGT normally comes with either a 21, a 28, or a 50 in the MGT 8.0.
The Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck is a vintage nitro monster truck that has caught the attention of many RC enthusiasts. In this in-depth review and test drive, we will take a closer look at this impressive machine and see how it performs on the road.
Overview
Well, this right here is the 1/10 scale Monster GT, Nitro, Nitro World Order. Call this Nitro, in this video I plan to do a little overview of this chassis. Let’s take a look under the body and see exactly what makes it incredible. We’ll also talk a little bit about its collectibility value.
Performance and Value
This model was originally introduced in 2007 and it was sold right alongside the Monster GT 4.6. Its retail price was about $279 and if you ask me, guys, I would definitely have loved to pay that price back when it was brand new. In fact, it was substantially cheaper than many other Nitro trucks at the time. Even the regular Traxxas T Max was in the mid $300s. This one was substantially cheaper, but in my true honest opinion, this is honestly a very worthwhile truck.
Suspension
Let’s take a look at the suspension. We only have one issue in the front here. We have one shock. Unfortunately, we are missing the second shock on this side, and on the other side, normally these came equipped with dual shocks.
Wheels and Body
On the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck, the 4.6 18-scale Monster GT wheels are in great condition. The foam has not deteriorated at all, and the chrome finish on the wheels has held up really well. The body of the truck is in impeccable condition, looking just like new.
Chassis
The Monster GT series is known for its unique chassis, which is made of extruded aluminum. The chassis is a solid piece of aluminum that is bent in such a way that it forms 90-degree angles from the back to the front. This design gives the truck exceptional stability and strength. The fuel tank also has a skid plate attached to it, providing added protection.
Engine and Fuel Tank
The MGT 3.0 Truck is equipped with the stock Team Associated 8 engine. Fans of the Nitro TC3 will be familiar with this engine, as it was commonly used in those models as well. It provides sufficient power for the truck’s performance. The fuel tank is easily accessible, and the seal seems to be in good condition.
Suspension
Unfortunately, upon closer examination, it is evident that one of the shocks is missing from the truck. This has posed a challenge in maintaining good ride height, and additional preload had to be added to compensate. Despite this setback, the suspension system generally performs well and offers a smooth and reliable ride.
Test Drive
Now that we’ve examined the various components of the MGT 3.0 Truck, let’s take it for a test drive. The durability and stability of the aluminum chassis are immediately noticeable as the truck handles various terrains with ease. It tackles bumps and jumps with confidence, allowing for an exhilarating off-road experience.
The power delivered by the Team Associated 8 engine is impressive, offering quick acceleration and impressive top speeds. The truck’s responsiveness to steering inputs is commendable, making it easy to navigate tight corners and obstacles. The suspension, despite the missing shock, still manages to provide a reasonably smooth and controlled ride.
The Ride Quality
The ride quality of the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck may be slightly affected, as seen in the video. It appears to be a bit bouncy, but this won’t deter me from taking it out for a spin. Despite its bounciness, I’m impressed by its overall stability. Even when I lift it up with just two fingers, it remains completely under control, neither tipping backwards nor lunging forward. It reminds me of the precision and control you would find in a BMW, truly the ultimate driving machine of nitro cars.
Impressive Features
One standout feature of this truck is the metal CBDs in the front. These provide durability and strength, ensuring that the truck can handle rough terrains with ease. The beefy bumper adds an extra layer of protection, preventing any potential damage from accidental collisions. I also appreciate the easy access grab and carry handle, making it convenient to transport this truck wherever I go. The weight distribution is excellently balanced, contributing to its overall stability.
Powerful Performance
What sets the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck apart from others is its two-speed transmission and reverse function. This feature-packed truck offers the versatility to adjust the speed according to your preferences and navigate tricky situations with ease. It rivals top-of-the-line trucks like the Traxxas Revo in terms of specifications alone. The inclusion of reverse adds an extra layer of convenience, allowing for easy maneuvering in tight spots.
Smart Design
The space-saving rear exhaust setup is a smart design choice by Team Associated. This setup is similar to the tra REO and offers multiple benefits. Firstly, it keeps the rest of the Nitro on the side, ensuring a clean and tidy appearance. Secondly, this design prevents the oil from the side exhaust from reaching the rear wheels. In other trucks, the oil can cause the rubber to harden over time, leading to the peeling of the chrome on the wheels. With the rear exhaust, these issues are avoided, resulting in a longer lifespan for the wheels.
Air Filter Considerations
One minor drawback is that the truck comes with the original foam on the air filter. While this may not affect the overall performance significantly, it is important to note that regular maintenance and cleaning of the air filter are crucial to ensure optimal engine performance. It is advisable to replace the foam with a high-quality filter foam for better filtration and protection of the engine.
In conclusion, the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck impresses with its ride quality, impressive features, powerful performance, and smart design choices. Despite the minor consideration with the air filter, this vintage nitro truck stands out as a top pick in the market. Whether you are a seasoned RC enthusiast or a beginner looking to delve into the world of nitro trucks, the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck is worth considering for its reliability and performance.
Chassis and Filter Placement
When it comes to the chassis of the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck, there is one thing that I found to be a bit tricky – the filter placement. I attempted to use a newer filter, but unfortunately, it didn’t fit in the exact position that I needed it to be in. This caused a problem as the body wouldn’t clear. However, I did notice that the filter was oiled on the bottom, which seemed to be okay. It’s important to ensure that the filter is positioned correctly to avoid any clearance issues.
Chassis Overview
Let’s take a quick look at the chassis of the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck. We are running a Fly Sky radio, which I will show you a little bit later. The chassis features reverse, two speeds, and a nitro engine with a pull start. One notable aspect of this truck is its excellent compression. It’s always a good sign when an engine delivers strong compression, as it indicates a well-functioning power source.
Comparison to Vintage Four Taurus
I couldn’t help but notice a vintage Four Taurus right next to me. I used to own that car, and it made me wonder if it had the same transmission problems that I experienced in the past. It seems like every Four Taurus I’ve had encountered transmission issues. In fact, they probably have more transmission problems than some of the USA 1s that came out from the factory. Some of those USA 1s were notorious for constantly slipping in first gear.
Noteworthy Features
Now, let’s discuss some of the features that I love about the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck setup. The two speed gear cover is a translucent color, which I find quite appealing. This clear design allows you to easily inspect the gears and identify any potential issues. On this truck, the gears appear to be in almost-new condition, which is always a good sign. Another aspect that I appreciate is the use of clear fuel lines. This setup seems to be entirely original, with minimal aftermarket modifications, apart from the steering servo and rear suspension.
In conclusion, the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck has some unique characteristics that make it stand out from the crowd. Despite the challenges with filter placement, the overall chassis design and features shine through. With its reliable nitro engine, strong compression, and visually appealing gear cover, this vintage nitro truck proves to be a top pick for enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned hobbyist or a newcomer looking for a thrilling off-road experience, the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck is definitely worth considering.
Initial Impressions
As I prepare to test drive the Team Associated MGT 3.0 Truck, I can’t help but be amazed at its idle. The clutch is not engaging yet, but everything else seems promising. Team Associated has a reputation for creating durable vehicles, and it seems like this truck is no exception.
Test Drive Experience
With the engine running smoothly, I decide to push the truck to its limits. The swall is where I unleash its power, and the truck responds with a nice cloud of smoke. Moving forward is a breeze, and shifting to reverse is effortless. This truck offers both forward and reverse capabilities, making it versatile for various obstacles.
As I navigate through the terrain, I’m impressed by the truck’s turning radius, allowing for smooth and precise maneuverability. The brakes prove to be excellent, giving me confidence in the truck’s overall performance.
Driveability Test
Continuing my driveability test, I decide to pick up the pace. The truck continues to impress, running smoothly without any issues. The engine temperature remains cool, indicating its efficiency. I have to say that this might be one of the best idling Nitro trucks I’ve come across, even though it is quite rich in fuel consumption.
Smoke pours out of the pipe, adding to the truck’s impressive performance. It’s a shame that the MGT 3.0 is not as well-known as other models. In my opinion, this truck deserves more recognition.
Overall Performance
Throughout the entire test drive, I encounter no problems. The engine doesn’t shut off unexpectedly, and the temperature remains stable. The only minor issue I notice is the need for front shocks, as the incorrect front suspension affects its stability. However, it doesn’t significantly impact the overall performance.

A Smooth Shift
As I lean the truck out, the two-speed transmission hits a sweet spot that offers the most optimal shift point. It’s incredible how perfectly it shifts, especially considering that I didn’t even adjust the two-speed. This is yet another testament to the durability and reliability of vintage Nitro vehicles.
Grip and Agility
The MGT 3.0 Truck comes equipped with tires that provide exceptional grip. This means that when making turns, the truck feels nimble and responsive. However, it’s important to note that the truck can feel a bit squirrely due to the high level of grip. This adds an extra element of excitement to the driving experience.
Suspension Issues
One aspect that stood out during the test drive was the suspension issues in the front. It seems that this area could use some improvements to enhance the overall performance of the truck. However, despite this minor setback, the first two speeds of the MGT 3.0 truck proved to be a success.

A Versatile Beast
As we continued to drive the MGT 3.0 truck, we realized its versatility. Whether it was maneuvering through rough terrain, jumping over obstacles, or simply enjoying a leisurely drive, this truck handled it all with ease. Its adaptability is truly commendable.
Fuel Supply Running Low
As the test drive came to an end, there was a slight disappointment. The fuel supply began to dwindle, limiting our ability to seize more adrenaline-pumping moments. But that didn’t dampen our excitement for the MGT 3.0 truck.
